1. Can I donate stocks to Broomfield FISH?
Yes! Donating appreciated securities, such as stocks and mutual funds, is a tax-efficient way to give. By donating stocks directly to Broomfield FISH, you may avoid capital gains taxes while supporting our mission. Please contact us for transfer instructions at events@broomfieldfish.org or call us at (303) 460-6828.
2. What information do I need to provide to make a stock or IRA donation?
Donating stock directly to Broomfield FISH provides two key tax benefits:
- It may eliminate capital gains tax on the sale of the stock.
- The donation is tax deductible at the current fair market value.
To donate stock or an IRA distribution, you will need to:
- Provide transfer instructions: Initiate a direct transfer from your investment account to Broomfield FISH’s designated account. If your stock is held with Fidelity, we can provide you with a form to simplify the process.
- Use the required transfer form: Obtain and complete the necessary transfer form from your brokerage or, if using Fidelity, from Broomfield FISH.
- Coordinate with your investment firm: If your stock is held outside of Fidelity, contact your firm to determine the process for a third-party transfer.
- Follow up with us: Many brokerages send stock donations anonymously, so please notify us when making your gift to ensure it is properly attributed.
- Confirm tax implications: Consult a tax professional to ensure the donation is documented correctly for tax purposes.
For stock donations, you will need our brokerage details. Your plan administrator will need our EIN (84-1591870) and mailing address (6 Garden Center, Broomfield, CO 80020) along with other details. Contact us for more information.
3. What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), and how does it work?
A QCD allows individuals aged 70½ or older to donate directly from their IRA to a qualified charity like Broomfield FISH without the distribution being counted as taxable income.
- A QCD can satisfy all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).
- RMDs are the minimum amounts that must be withdrawn annually from certain retirement accounts once you reach age 73. Click HERE to learn more.
- Your financial institution can send the distribution directly to Broomfield FISH.
- If you donate from your IRA via a QCD, the amount given is not included in your taxable income, potentially reducing your tax burden. This is particularly beneficial for those who do not itemize deductions.
As this impacts your taxes, consult with a tax advisor. To make a QCD gift, contact your IRA plan administrator. For more information click HERE.
4. Can I give through my Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)?
Absolutely! A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a simple and tax-efficient way to support Broomfield FISH. You can recommend a grant through your DAF provider.
