Recognising and distinguishing alternative vowel sounds by using letter names
Children know they need to use blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation to help them with new or unfamiliar words

Children consolidate previous knowledge of Initial Code and apply their understanding when reading books that are appropriate and phonetically decodable or when reading new or unfamiliar words.
Children use their growing knowledge of Extended Code and concepts to help them with their spelling of particular sounds, they are able to identify spelling patterns and comment on what they notice.
Children learn new digraphs and trigraphs and continue to use their decoding skills with increasing ability to read real and pseudo words by sight
Children can respond speedily to all the sounds taught when shown and distinguish between alternative pronunciation by using letter names
Children can use the sound the letter makes as well as identifying the name of the letter that makes that sound
