Camp Activity: High beam

Introduction  (Tell us what is being described)

The ‘High Beam’ is one of the air activities at Camp Adair in Hunua.

Characteristics: Special Features: a place/person/thing.  Have what can a person or thing o/d

It is stationed among straight tall and strong Pine Trees behind the camp dining room.  A solid wooden platform is at the base of the Two Pines that are connected by a long wooden beam about 7 meters above the ground.

A ladder is placed against the pine tree with the metal round hooks.  The hooks are inserted into the solid trunk of the pine tree and used as rungs for the participant to stand and hold onto as s/he  climbs upwards to the horizontal beam. A safety check is carried out before the climb begins.

Evaluation: How do you feel about this thing/place?

This activity is great as a confidence builder for height.  It also has potential for building teams as the climber relies solely on the instructor and the belaying team.  This is an activity that I would not want to do again. Because I am scared of heights. This activity isn't good for people that are scared of heights.
