Daily Happenings Sample
Pixies (toddlers: 18-30 months):
We started our morning by having yogurt dip and cucumbers. We talked about the color of the cucumbers. We saved two pieces of cucumbers for Jellybean and munchkins’ guinea pig for pm snack. We sang “Who Is Here Today?” and “The Wheels On The Bus”. We explored our dramatic play and sorted big and small bears in baskets. Other friends played with cardboard blocks, pushed trucks, and pushed the keyboards on the piano. Teacher read the book, Little Acorn. Outside, we watched construction trucks go by and a school bus. We collected branches that had fallen from the tree and leaves. Some friends rode cars and practiced saying “excuse me” to let friends know they were coming. In the sensory bin we explored with cocoa mulch. We scooped cocoa mulch into cups and practiced using tongs to pick up leaves and pinecones. For art, we painted leaves using brown and yellow paint. A few friends also painted on butcher paper. Back inside we washed our hands and we helped the teacher cut the vegetables for our friendship soup.
Sprites (2 year olds):
Our morning started by giving the chickens food and fresh water. Three friends helped teacher Arely feed the chickens but we didn’t find any eggs today. One friend said that maybe we needed to give them more water and food so they could lay eggs and then we could check later to see if they have laid any eggs. After that we headed inside the classroom to have our morning snack. As we washed our hands some friends shared what they did over the weekend with their families. One friend said he made pancakes with his mom and dad. Two friends said they went to the aquarium to touch jellyfish and starfish, and they saw a lot of fish and sharks. Lastly, other friends said that they played cars with mom/dad. Then we headed to the garden to see if anything was growing. Friends used shovels to dig in the garden and others tried to see what was growing; some friends maybe flowers or green beans were growing. At the playground, a group used foam shapes and paper to make collages and other friends used markers to draw different shapes. At the other table, friends used toy people and animals with a wooden house. Two friends used wooden blocks to build a ramp and a garage for their cars and pets. A couple of Sprites danced to different movement songs including the Race cars song. One friend used Legos to make cupcakes and tall towers. Inside the classroom, friends peeled animal stickers and we shared our favorite animals at the table. Friends also used markers to draw a house for their different animal stickers. At the carpet, friends used cardboard blocks and foam blocks to make towers. A couple of friends read books with Teacher Kathleen in the book area.
Munchkins (3 year olds):
We began our day with our morning snack of Kix cereal and milk. While eating we sang our good morning song in English and Spanish. We also talked about our plans for our upcoming family days. One Munchkin told us they were going on a trip on a bus with their mommy and daddy. Another Munchkin said they were going to stay home and play with their momma. After snack we gathered on the carpet for our “Friday Dance Party”. We danced along to the songs; “Baby Shark”, “Down by the Bay”, and “Stand Up Sit Down”. We then decided to finish our dance party outside on the grass. Once outside, we danced to “The Floor is Lava”. We spread out the octagon blocks and used them to jump on to get out of the “lava”. We also danced to a few more different songs. A group of friends then lined up the blocks and made a “train”. They hopped and walked on the blocks while holding on to one another to form a “train”. At the table, one friend collaged using foam pieces and feathers. Another friend made “coffee” in the sensory bin, using cornmeal to fill up a bottle. In the reading pool, a group of Munchkins gathered as Teacher read books. While reading the book, Hola Jalapeño we talked about the different food we saw. Some friends said that they have had some of the food before and other friends said they have not. After we were all done reading, we lined up and headed back inside for our share day! Friends spent time talking about and showing the different items they brought to share. Some friends demonstrated how their items worked, another friend read us a book they brought, one friend passed around their stuffed animal for us to feel. When we were all done sharing, we played in centers. At the table, friends chose to play with playdough. We used different tools to shape and manipulate our playdough. One friend made a “pizza”. On the carpet, two friends pushed cars down a ramp. During lunch we answered the question of the day, “If you had a pet dragon, what would you name it?” Some of the Munchkins’ answers included: “Cockroach, because it’s silly”, “Fluffy, because it’s cute”, and “Snoopy, like the dog”.
Muskrats (5 year olds):
We started the morning singing “days of the week” and mentioning what things were shaped like a rectangle in our class. Then we saw pictures from a friend’s birthday party and talked about birthdays. After snack time, we spent time caring for babies in the dramatic center. We fed, changed, and played with them. On the rug, one friend spent his whole time making a “house” with small furniture pieces and blocks. Then he decided to add more things like cars and arctic animals as “pets.” In the writing center, two peers used different materials to make art. Outside, one group spent time exploring water beads while another mixed primary colors. When we couldn’t see a color clearly, we walked to a sunny area and saw what color we had made. For circle time, we practiced writing the number 1. Some of us read the book Shades Of People and talked about our skin tone. Then, we danced to “Listen and Move.” In the yard, we mixed sand and water in the sandbox and made “headbands” and other things with ribbon. During lunch time, we talked about the letter “X” and listened to a few songs we asked our teacher to play.
