DISCHARGE BRACHIOPLASTY SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS
PLEASE NOTE: These instructions are to be followed as a general guideline. Any changes to these instructions will be discussed with you by Dr. Petersen.
1. Do not take any aspirin or aspirin like medications (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, etc.) for two weeks post-op. These drugs may increase bleeding. If you have any questions concerning any medications, contact Dr. Petersen.
2. Smoking causes wound healing problems. It may cause death of the skin on the abdomen or the umbilicus. It is required that the patient not smoke for 4 weeks following any surgery.
3. Any bandages must be worn until removed by Dr. Petersen.
4. Apply ice packs around the arm bandages as tolerated for 24-48 hours post-op. This may help to reduce swelling. Do not apply ice packs directly to the skin.
5. Sponge bathing is necessary until instructed otherwise by Dr. Petersen. Be sure to dry all areas as well as possible.
7. Watch for active bleeding, excessive bruising, or abnormal swelling or pain. Some small amount of drainage is expected at the site of incisions. Chilling, fever, shortness of breath, chest pains, calf swelling, or drug reactions are also of concern. Contact Dr. Petersen if these occur.
8. You will be seen in the office for a follow up visit the day after surgery please call to make an appointment. A check for problems including bleeding, infection, and blood supply will be done at this time. Leave the compression garment in tack until this appointment, however, drainage sponges can be replaced if they become saturated.
9. No exercising, lifting, heavy exertion, heavy housework, etc, for 6 weeks. Too much activity can cause bleeding, swelling, or breakdown of the stitches. You will wear the compression garment for 6 weeks. This can be removed for showering and laundering.
10. Have someone assist you with ambulating and going to the bathroom for 1-2 days post op. This will reduce any risk of injury if dizziness or fainting should occur. We encourage frequent walking and moving of the legs while in bed to reduce blood clots (DVT’s).
11. The drains should be checked every 4-8 hours. Remove the drainage contents as directed by the nurse and record the date, time and amount removed. It is usually necessary for this amount to be less than 25cc’s for a 24 hour period for the drain to be removed. The drainage will usually change from reddish color to a light or yellowish color over time.
12. If for any reason the patient becomes unresponsive, delirious, or you feel something is seriously wrong and needs immediate attention, call 911 and/or go immediately to the nearest ER.
