During the service - hints and tips
Avoid background noise!
Please keep your microphone muted, unless you are contributing at that point.
You will see a camera picture of the speaker, and we’ll also share the song words and slides used.
Press the Mute button . When it looks like the picture on the right, no-one can hear you
Other things you can do
If you move your mouse to the bottom of the zoom window, a pop up toolbar will appear.

From the Toolbar you can carry out various tasks, the ones in bold are the ones you are likely to need for Sunday
- Mute your microphone and/or adjust audio settings - if your sound isn’t coming out of the speakers, look here for alternative devices
- Start & stop your video - if you decide you don’t want to be seen for any reason
- Invite - add other people to the call using a link or your email program
- Participants - see a list of everyone who is on the call. You can “Raise your hand” here if you want to attract the host’s attention
- Share Screen - not needed, although we may use this if you need help with audio settings
- Record - we will be recording the service so the sermon can be listened to again
Seeing other people!
From the top right hand corner you can choose between Gallery view. Gallery view shows small images of up to 49 participants, and Speaker view, where you will see the main speaker.

We recommend you maximise the Zoom window, rather than choosing the full screen option.
On the tablet version, Gallery view switch is on the left-hand side of the screen

Interacting : chats and reactions
- Chat - opens the chat window so that you can sent text messages to Everyone, or to individuals
If you want to say an “Amen” to anything, this is the place to do it. Please don’t over-use it though!
- Reactions - you can send a clap 👏 or a thumbs-up 👍
On the tablet version, ‘Chat’, ‘Raise Hand’ and the Clap and thumbs-up Reactions can be found under the ‘...More’ button

Using chat
During the service, you can use Chat to send messages to the Moderator, to everyone, or privately
Click on the Chat button
PLEASE NOTE : The default is Everyone unless you select different from the drop down
- The person named may not be the only person sitting at the other end
- So don’t exchange confidential information this way

On the tablet version, ‘Chat’, ‘Raise Hand’ and ‘Reaction’ can be found under the ‘...More’ button

If someone sends a chat, this is what it will look like

On a tablet or phone, chat notifications appear at the top

Leaving the meeting
Click or tap on the red Leave meeting words. You will be asked to confirm this.
Dealing with problems
I just see “Launching”

If this happens
- Click the link which says download and run Zoom.
- It should then download a file to your browser
- Look down in the bottom left-hand area of your browser

- Double-click on the Zoom icon. You will see “Your meeting will start soon” and a progress bar
- Accept any messages asking for permission. Mac users might need to retype their password.
- Zoom should then install and connect to the service
If this doesn’t work, see the section of this document “Join by browser from any computer with speakers”.
I can’t install or run the app
You can still join by browser. See Join by browser from any device section below
I can’t join by computer/tablet
You can still join by telephone and listen. The quality won’t be brilliant but do the following
- Dial 020 3051 2874 (ordinary London number but you may still be charged)
- When the voice prompts you, type in the meeting ID with your keypad
399 364 514
- Press the hash (#) key on your keypad
- When you are asked to enter your Participant ID, just press the hash (#) key on your keypad again
- You will be connected to sound
I’ve joined but can’t hear
This is usually a problem on PCs rather than laptops. The most common cause is because your computer thinks your monitor has speakers in it, even though it doesn’t and has picked it to play sound.
To fix this
- Where is says Audio, click the up arrow
- You’ll see a menu which looks something like the one below
- Click on the option which looks like Speakers or Audio, or pick Same as system
- In our example, ACER is the monitor and has been selected by Zoom even though it has no speakers
- We need to pick Speakers/Headphones Realtek Audio

The toolbar has disappeared
You may have pressed the ALT key on your keyboard.
Press it again and the toolbar should reappear.
Join by browser from any device (speakers needed)
- Click on the link for the Sunday service
https://zoom.us/j/399364514
- If you only see the “Launching” option ….

- Click on the link which says click here
- An extra line will appear which says “If you cannot download or run the application, join from your browser.”
- Click join from your browser. You will see

- Accept the privacy notice by clicking I agree
- You should see a prompt to enter your name

PLEASE NOTE - everyone else who connects to the meeting will be able to see this
So feel free to type a first name only, nickname or initials
- Click Join and you’ll then see the broadcast from church

- In order to hear, you’ll need to pick an option
- Join Audio by Computer (recommended) - Zoom uses your PC/laptop speakers to hear the service, and microphone if you have one
- Phone Call - use your phone to call a number and listen in (it’s an ordinary London or Edinburgh number but you may incur a cost for this)
- If you click Phone call, it will tell you how what to dial on your telephone. The sound quality will not be so good

If you click Computer Audio you should then be connected
