Course Description: AP Chemistry is a first-year college level course. This course follows the Advanced Placement curriculum set by the College Board; therefore, AP Classroom will be one of the main resources for AP Chemistry. Students are required to watch the videos in AP Classroom. Laboratory experience is extensive. The time and effort required of students in the classroom and outside the classroom differs significantly from the usual high school science course. This course is designed to prepare students for college chemistry courses and the Chemistry Advanced Placement Exam. Students will have the opportunity to take the AP Chemistry Exam in May of 2023 to possibly receive college credit for the course.

Course Outline and Content:

Unit 1: Atomic Structure and Properties (7-9%)

Unit 2: Molecular and Ionic Compound Structure and Properties (7-9%)

Unit 3: Intermolecular Forces and Properties (18-22%)

Unit 4: Chemical Reactions (7-9%)

Unit 5: Kinetics (7-9%)

Unit 6: Thermodynamics (7-9%)

Unit 7:  Equilibrium (7-9%)

Unit 8:  Acids and Bases (11-15%)

Unit 9: Applications of Thermodynamics (7-9%)

Special Assignments and Projects: Students will take a multiple choice final exam at the end of first semester. For second semester, students will complete a final exam teaching project.  The project will begin after the AP exam and will be graded with a rubric.

Classroom Rules and Discipline Procedures: All students must adhere to the rules and expectations outlined in the Henry County Schools student handbook and the Union Grove High School student handbook addendum.

Four-Step Discipline Policy

1. Verbal warning

2. Contacting parents/guardians

3. Early morning or afternoon detention

4. Referral to administrator

Hall Passes: Restroom passes will not be given the first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes of class. Restrooms are open during each class change and are to be used during that time. The student will be dismissed from class only if he/she becomes ill or if circumstances arise which prevent the student from using the restroom between classes or if medical documentation is provided. Student passes will be allocated using our student conductor system. The student conductor system will allow students to log where/when they are leaving the class.  Once a pass is approved by student conductor, the student will receive a written pass from the teacher. Students will be limited to one restroom pass per hour.  If student conductor does not allow a student to get a pass, no paper pass will be issued.  Students are not allowed to take their cell phones with them into the restroom.

Lab safety guidelines will be strictly enforced! Every student will receive training in topics related to laboratory safety.  All students must sign and adhere to a laboratory safety contract in order to participate in laboratory activities. Eating and drinking are not allowed in lab area nor is it allowed in the classroom area (with the exception of water).

Make-up Policy: This is a college level course.  If a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to check Google Classroom for the work that was missed. Grades will only be given for assignments missed due to an excused absence. For daily work you have one day for each day you miss to get makeup work turned in.  If you miss a quiz, test or project, be prepared to take the quiz/test or turn in your project the day you return to school.

Late Work: Twenty percent will be deducted for each day an assignment is late.

Grading System:

GRADING SCALE:                        GRADING CATEGORES:

        A =  90-100                        80% Coursework

B =  80-89                                 40% Assessment Tasks (Tests, Projects)

C =  74-79                                 40% Practice Work (Quizzes, Labs, Classwork)

D =  70-73                                20% Comprehensive Final Exam

F =  below 70

Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy: The cell phone/electronic device policy begins when students enter the designated classroom area. All students will place all cell phones/devices in the teacher assigned caddy. During this time, cell phones must be turned off. Additionally, all smart watches, headphones, earpods, or other electronic devices must be caddied until the end of class. Students should not have earpods/headphones on them during class time. Cell phones/devices will remain caddied until the end of class. Students will NOT be allowed to take their phones/devices out of the room when they have a hall pass to the restroom, media center, etc. Students will be allowed to use cell phones/devices before first period, during lunch, and during class transition.

On Time Policy: In order to be considered “on time” to class, the student must be across the threshold of the classroom or designated classroom area by the end of the tardy bell. Students have plenty of time during class changes to go to the bathroom or locker. We expect all students to enter class before the tardy bell rings. It is the student’s responsibility to be on time and it is your responsibility to have a pass or a signed hall pass if you have a reason for being late.

Unit Repair Plan: The Unit Repair Plan for AP Chemistry will consist of test corrections for the unit tests. Students will correct each wrong answer and justify why the correct answer is correct in addition, they will justify why the answer they chose is wrong. A curve will only be given to those students that meet these expectations on test corrections on time. The lowest test score will be dropped for first semester if ALL assigned Progress Checks for the semester are completed on time. There will be a take-home test during second semester; therefore, a test score will NOT be dropped second semester.

Special note on secured material: AP Chemistry is governed by the AP College Board. Because of this, I am restricted in the material that I can post online or send home with students. Quizzes and exams CANNOT be posted for public use or leave my classroom. Any attempt at the students to remove them from the class and/or record information on these materials will result in disciplinary action. Students are welcome to review those materials I can post or see me to review those that cannot whenever I am available. Remember, the use of AP Classroom is very important for this course in preparing for the AP Exam.
