University Workers Solidarity with Palestine Open Letter

Open Letter: British University Workers in Solidarity with Palestine

We, the undersigned, support the Unified Call for Justice and Freedom in Palestine from Palestinian Higher Education institutions and the call from the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine that our Vice Chancellors speak out against the atrocities being perpetrated against Gaza’s university sector and the attacks on higher education elsewhere in occupied Palestine. As university workers, we support the call from over 30 Palestinian trade unions and professional associations to end all complicity and to stop arming Israel. We demand that our universities take action now.

It is with mounting horror that we bear witness to the merciless bombardment of Gaza by the Israeli state. As we enter the winter break of the academic year, the siege of Gaza enters its third month, and shows very little sign of abating. The scale of life lost in Gaza from this onslaught (18,205 people as of 12 December, with 49,645 injured) is a humanitarian catastrophe of world-historical proportions. We are seeing the eradication of a people and their culture, both in the fatalities, which have wiped out whole family and community lineages, the destruction of the built environment and the displacement of people from their land. We lament all that this civilisational butchery has wreaked upon the Palestinian people, and mourn what this loss means for world knowledge and culture.

More than 439 Palestinians from the university community have been killed in the Israeli strikes since 7 October (according to reports from 9 November) and 11 higher education buildings have been completely or partially destroyed. This has disrupted the education of nearly 90,000 higher education students as universities have been forced to suspend all operations. The Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) reported that the higher education buildings that were completely or partially damaged included the Islamic University of Gaza, Al-Azhar University, the North Gaza and Tubas branches of Al-Quds Open University, and buildings of An-Najah National University located at Palestine Technical University Kadoorie. Since then, we have also heard of the destruction of the faculty of medicine of the Islamic University in Gaza. Of the six universities there, five have had buildings damaged or destroyed. The oldest institution, the Islamic University of Gaza, has had nine of its 14 buildings destroyed. As for attacks on school infrastructure, reports from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) in November indicate that 239 government schools have been bombed in the Gaza Strip (more than 40% of total schools in Gaza), of which 45 schools were severely destroyed, and 50 UNRWA schools were attacked. Schools in the West Bank have not been spared from the Israeli occupation attacks, where 27 governmental schools were attacked in the West Bank.

Amongst those killed in recent weeks were three towering figures in Palestinian academia. On November 14, Prof Mohammad Eid Shabir, a microbiologist and former president of the Islamic University of Gaza for fifteen years, was killed along with several family members. On December 2, Dr Sufyan Tayeh, president of the Islamic University of Gaza, was killed along with his family in an Israeli air strike in the Al-Falouja area of Jabalia, in the north of the Gaza Strip. Dr Tayeh was one of the pioneer researchers in theoretical physics and applied mathematics. He was the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization chair in physics, astronomical physics, and space sciences in Palestine and considered to be in the top 2% of science researchers worldwide in 2021. On December 6, Dr Refaat Alareer was killed along with his family in an Israeli air strike on al-Daraj area of Gaza City. Dr Alareer was a Professor of English Literature and Creative Writing at the Islamic University of Gaza and was one of Gaza's most important poets and writers. In his short lifetime, he was committed to spreading the stories of Gazans and supporting Gazans in telling their own stories. He co-founded the organisation We Are Not Numbers. This mentorship program matches writers in Gaza with authors abroad and promotes the power of storytelling as a means of resistance.

As university workers, we cannot remain silent while students and colleagues in our profession are being killed in ever greater numbers and occupied Palestine’s academic infrastructure is obliterated. Just as we all commit to the international scope of our teaching and research activities, we are equally bound to defend our sector from international war crimes. It is our responsibility to openly voice our condemnation of the Israeli state’s military campaign in Gaza and its deliberate targeting of entire neighbourhoods, hospitals, schools, UN shelters, and universities, which constitutes a grave violation of international law. Under international humanitarian law, ‘civilian objects’ such as educational sites must not be targeted for attack. We cannot return to business as normal in the new year without a tangible sign that our institutional leadership shares our concern for the future of Palestinian Higher Education and the people of Palestine. In the face of ongoing complicity across British HEIs, we commit to doing our utmost to exert further and ongoing pressure across the sector in 2024.

We, the undersigned, demand action in our universities now. In following the calls of the three documents we cite in the first paragraph of this letter, we demand that our universities, sectoral organisations, and funders immediately:

Issue a statement condemning Israel’s ongoing attacks on students, staff, and educational infrastructure and calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire;
Urge immediate entry into Gaza of sufficient amounts of life-saving humanitarian goods (including water, food, fuel, and medicine), equitably distributed throughout the whole territory of the Gaza Strip;
Demand UN protection for the 2.3 million Palestinian civilians trapped under siege in the Gaza Strip;
Reject any ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their homeland;
Support dismantling the settler colonial and apartheid system to achieve a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace.
End any relationships or collaborations with, or investments in organisations (including other universities) that are involved in the arms industry or arming the Israeli state, including the direct production of weapons systems; the production of components and software used in weapons, weapons systems and weapons delivery systems; and/or providing investment, loans, and other financial services to companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology used to oppress Palestinians.
