Frequently asked questions
- How to reach IIT Hyderabad?
- Please refer to the guidelines attached with the document.
2. Will accommodation be provided at IIT Hyderabad?
- No accommodation will be provided at IIT Hyderabad. Candidates may look for hotels/lodges and other options in nearby villages of Kandi (3.3 km) and Isnapur (17 km), or town Sangareddy (7 km), or Hyderabad (nearest Patancheruvu is 24 km; Chandanagar, Miyapur, Lingampally are 1hr away).
3. Will TA/DA be provided for attending the written test?
- No.
4. What are the different eateries, restaurants available on IIT Hyderabad Campus?
- There is a wet canteen with different options (like lunch, sandwiches, maggi, snacks, tea, juice, milkshakes) available on campus near student hostels. Additionally, restaurants like Amritsarwala (North-Indian), Dakshin (South-Indian), Subway, Pizza hut, Beijing Bites, and other options are available in the Technology Research Park (TRP) within the IIT Hyderabad Campus.
5. Will the written exam be online or offline?
- The written exam will be offline and conducted on 03th Nov 2022 from 1000-1200 hrs. No requests for conducting the written test in an online mode will be entertained.
6. Will the interview be online or offline?
- The interview will be offline. Only the candidates shortlisted following the written test are eligible for the interview. The schedule for the interview will be communicated after the examination on the MAE, IITH website (MAE | IIT Hyderabad). Please refer to this website for more details. The candidates are requested to only communicate to the Admissions team at me_admissions@iith.ac.in for clarification.
7. What is the itinerary for 03th and 04th Nov 2022?
A. It will be shared in due course of time.
8. Can the dates on written test and interview be postponed on personal/medical grounds?
A. The dates are final and cannot be changed. Candidates who do not appear for the written
test are not considered for subsequent rounds.
9. Will the interview be single or multiple rounds?
- The interview will be conducted in two-stages. First round will be conducted by the faculty from the stream chosen by the candidate for Ph.D. specialization. The second round will be conducted by faculty of all the streams in MAE, IITH.
10. How do we choose the stream? Is this choice final?
- The applicants are requested to check the MAE page for different research streams offered by the department. You will convey this information while filling out the application. This choice will be final.
11. What is the format of the written test? What is the duration of the exam?
- The exam is an objective type exam with multiple choice questions and fill in the blanks type questions. There will be individual sections on Maths and Aptitude, Solid Mechanics and Design, Thermofluids, Manufacturing and Aerospace. Each section comprises 20 questions. The section on Maths and Aptitude is compulsory. The candidate will be required to answer any two of the other four sections. Finally, the candidates will be required to answer 60 questions in 120 minutes.
Each question carries one mark. There is a negative marking of 0.5 marks.
In addition to the above questions, the candidates will be required to write a short description of a research project undertaken for their Master’s/Bachelor’s degree. This will be done after the end of the written examination. As part of this, you will describe the thesis work on one sheet under headings 1. Title 2. objectives. 3. Methodology 4. Important Results 5. Conclusion.
12. Is the choice of specialization decided based on the sections answered in the written
examination?
- It is expected that the candidate chooses the specialization, he/she is comfortable. However, it is not limited to the sections answered or marks obtained in a particular section attempted.
13. What are the documents required to be carried for the written examination and
interviews?
- The candidates are required to get a pen, calculator and any central govt. issued photo identity card. Without proper identification, the candidate will not be allowed to appear for the examination.
14. Where do candidates report on the day of written examination (03rd Nov 2022)?
- Volunteers at admissions desk in the foyer of C-Block, IIT Hyderabad. If required, they will escalate it to concerned faculty.

16. Whom to contact for queries before 03th Nov and after 04th Nov 2022?
- Drop a mail at me_admissions@iith.ac.in. All queries regarding graduate admissions should be sent to me_admission (me_admissions@iith.ac.in); queries to personal email ids of faculties will not be entertained, and may lead to the rejection of the application
17. What is the syllabus for the written examination?

18. What is the syllabus for the interview?
- The interview will test the technical knowledge of the candidates. Under technical knowledge, we will try to assess if the candidate knows basic engineering mathematics and the basics of the specialization (Aero, IDM, MAD, TFE) opted by the candidate. There is no set syllabus for this.
19. What if the candidate reports late for the written test?
- The candidate will have to submit the written test at the scheduled end time without any extension.
20. What if the candidate reports late for the interview?
- The candidate will have defaulted on the interview and lose his application.
21. There is an error in the application form submitted to the IITH portal. Is any correction
in application form possible?
- The candidate is advised to contact the me_admissions test immediately. Minor modifications can be made with the permission of the DPGC and Head of the Department. Major modifications require approval from the Academic section, IITH.
