Reishi Mushroom Block

(Ganoderma lucidum)

Congratulations on purchasing your very own mushroom grow kit! With this kit you’ll be able to  experience the satisfaction of growing mushrooms in your own home. The block you’ve purchased contains a mixture of locally sourced hardwood sawdust (either oak or alder) and wheat bran which has been properly hydrated and sterilized in our autoclaves for 5 hours. The block was then inoculated with spawn (the seed of the mushroom) and allowed to incubate in our warehouse until now. At this point the bag should be sealed and the block should be fully colonized with white mycelium (the body of the organism).  With minimal care and attention this block can produce multiple mushrooms. Reishi mushrooms are high in beneficial bio-active compounds and can be used fresh or dehydrated to make tea or dried and ground into powder to add into to meals or beverages. Reishi mushrooms can be grown in a sealed spawn bag to form an anter style body. Alternatively, the bag can be opened and result in a conk shaped mushroom.  Either can be used for extracting medicinal properties and it is up to you which you prefer to grow.

Thing you will need

  1. A cool area to fruit the mushrooms (60-80F)
  2. A clean sharp knife, razor blade, or scissors
  3. Fine mist spray bottle with chlorine free water

Preparation

Always Inspect the bag. The bag should be sealed and free of mold or bacteria. Yellow liquid is a normal byproduct of digestion but presence of other colors (green)  may indicate a contamination.

For antler formation (recommended for maximum yield)

  1. Ensure the top of the bag is upright so that there is plenty of open space inside of the bag above the block.
  2. Once mushrooms appear they should take 45-90 days to ripen, although they can continue to grow in the bag for several months. When ready (the white section at the tip of the antler has reduced to a thin line), remove from the block by simply cutting off with a clean pair of scissors at the base of the mushroom.

For conk formation:

  1. Allow young fruits to grow in bag to desired size. They should have some yellow-orange color with white tips (usually about 2”-4” long).
  2. Use a clean sharp knife or scissors to cut off the top of the bag just above the block. Be careful not to damage the mycelium or any young fruit bodies while doing this.
  3. Lightly mist the mushrooms a few times a day as the mushrooms grow. A well vented humidity tent (provided) should be considered to hold moisture in the area around the block.
  4. Once mushrooms appear they should take 45-90 days to ripen. When ready (the white margin around the edge has reduced to a thin line), remove the mushrooms by simply cutting off with a clean pair of scissors at the base of the mushroom.
