Mark S. Atkinson currently resides in North Syracuse with his wife Helen and daughters Dana and Lauren. Mark, a 1974 graduate of North Syracuse High School, was born in 1955 to Mark and Sheila Atkinson at England Air Force Base (AFB) in Louisiana, while his father was a member of the United States Air Force. Upon his father’s retirement, the Atkinson family moved to New York, settling into the North Syracuse area. Mark attended North Syracuse public schools, playing three sports each year while in high school. After graduation, Mark enlisted in the Air Force and was trained as a B-52 Bomber Crew Chief, assigned to Loring AFB, Maine.
After active duty, Mark joined the 174th Fighter Wing, Hancock Field, New York Air National Guard as a traditional guardsman. Shortly after beginning his assignment with the Air National Guard, Mark was offered a full-time military position in the Weapons Shop. Through his career, Mark also worked in Munitions, Quality Services, Safety and Operations. During Mark’s 34 years of service, he held such key positions as Wing Weapons Manager, Aircraft Sortie Generation Chief, Wing Safety Manager, Operations Chief and Command Chief Master Sergeant.
While assigned to the 174th, Mark was deployed to South West Asia six times. Mark’s Operations have included Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Northern Watch and the Iraq Campaign.
Mark has been awarded over 20 Federal and State Medals and numerous Decorations including the Meritorious Service Medal with one device. Mark attended Columbia College on Hancock Field and earned an advanced degree. He is a life member of the North Syracuse VFW Post and a member of the Cicero American Legion.
Over the years, Mark has performed extensive community-wide service, volunteering through several organizations including the Old Newsboys, Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army. Mark has served on the Veterans Advisory Board and the Air Force Academy Selection Committee for the 25th Congressional District. While volunteering in North Syracuse on committees such as the Municipal Building Committee, Mark was asked to run for Village Trustee.
Mr. Atkinson has been in office for more than seven years and has won two elections. As an elected official, Mark has served as the Chairman of the Public Safety committee and created the Employee Safety Committee, of which he is the Chairman. Mark Atkinson currently serves as Deputy Mayor for the Village of North Syracuse.
Beverly (Bev) Hill currently resides in Cicero with her husband Stewart (Stew) Hill. Bev, a 1965 graduate of North Syracuse High School, was born in Syracuse in 1947 to Myron Hill and Jean Sydorak. She grew up in Clay and attended Cicero Elementary School, Roxboro Junior High School and North Syracuse High School.
After graduating from high school, Bev attended Hartwick College for Nursing and subsequently earned both bachelors and masters degrees in nursing from Syracuse University. Hill was on active duty for the United States Navy Nurse Corps from 1970 through 1972, serving in Massachusetts; Vietnam and California.
Bev has also made use of her nursing degrees through employment at Cazenovia College, Syracuse University College of Nursing, as a Clinical Nursing Instructor for St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center and currently as a school nurse at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Mrs. Hill has been involved in numerous community activities through the years, including volunteerism with the Cicero Youth Soccer League, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and PTO at Lakeshore Road Elementary School. She is also an ardent support of youth sports teams and enjoys getting to know her students and sharing their excitement for the activities in which they are involved.
