Title I Information at W. D. Williams Elementary
Lead Title I Reading Specialists: Maggie Brown and Hailey Hudgins
Title I Assistants: Jan Campbell, Brookie Stollenmaier, Karen Lawing, Brittany Payne
What is Title 1?
The purpose of Title 1 is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments. Title 1 funding first began under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965 as part of the Great Society Program. Title 1 is now the largest federally funded program. The funds provide schools with additional staff, additional materials for our kids, staff training, supplemental materials for teachers and family engagement opportunities.
How do the students benefit?
W. D. Williams has a school-wide Title 1 program where all students and staff benefit from the federal funds. A portion of our federal funds are used to fund literacy specialists, Title I assistants, and a full time coach/interventionist. The specialists and the assistants conduct small group literacy lessons in grades K-5 for 30 minutes every day. The specialists also provide additional interventions for students according to their individualized plans. Funds are also used to purchase items such as student notebooks in Fundations, texts to use during small group literacy time, online platforms such as Dreambox, and supplemental texts in Wit & Wisdom. Family engagement activities and professional development for staff are also funded by Title 1.
