HOW TO READ BOULDER SCORES

Find your event at usacresults.org

Competitors are grouped by Category and then sorted by their current rank in that category.  To view the results for an individual Category, click on the 3-letter Category label (MJR, FYA, MYD, etc.) on the top left part of the screen.  To return to view the results of all Categories, click the on the same 3-letter Category label again. You can search for individual competitors and see the status of each Category:

You can also toggle between different rounds (Qualification, Final, etc.) at championship events.

In the results display, the competitor’s performance on each boulder is shown in the column directly below the boulder number (B1, B2, etc.)

  • If a climber achieves a particular objective (Top, Zone, or LowZone) on that boulder, the box in the row that corresponds to that objective (T, Z, L) will be colored green.  In addition, the number of attempts that it took them to achieve that objective will be displayed inside the green box.
  • If a competitor does not achieve a particular objective on a boulder that they attempt, the box will be colored gray, with no number inside it.
  • If a competitor makes no attempts on a boulder, there will be no boxes displayed under that boulder number.

Within their Category, competitors are ranked based on the following criteria, in this order:

CRITERIA

LOCATION

Number of Tops achieved

Left of the letter T

Number of Zones achieved

Left of the letter Z

Number of Low Zones achieved (if used in that category)

Left of the letter L

Total number of Attempts to achieve Tops (lower is better)

Right of the letter T

Total number of Attempts to achieve Zones (lower is better)

Right of the letter Z

Total number of Attempts to achieve Low Zones (lower is better)

Right of the letter L

In the Semi-Final and Final round of a championship event, if two or more competitors are tied on all six of the above criteria, then their tie is broken using a “count back” to their result from the previous round. In the Final round, if they are still tied after the “count back” (or it is a single-round championship such as Regionals) their relative rankings will be determined - as per rule 8.14.3 - by comparing:

  1. the number of Tops attained on the 1st attempt, then the number of Tops attained on the 2nd attempt, and so on; then
  2. where the comparison in (A) cannot break a tie, by comparing the number of Zones attained on the 1st attempt, then the number of Zones attained on the 2nd attempt, and so on; then
  3. where the comparisons in (A) and (B) cannot break a tie, by comparing the number of Low Zones attained on the 1st attempt, then the number of Low Zones attained on the 2nd attempt, and so on.

If competitors remain tied following the tabulation of (A), (B) and (C), the results of such competitors shall be considered equal.

Athletes designated EA (Extra Advancement) do not affect the advancement of other ranked athletes. Advancement is first determined using ranking among only non-EA athletes; EA athletes advance if they are ranked better than (or tied with) advancing non-EA athletes. EA effectively replaces prior designations of PQ and FN.

Once all the competitors in a category have finished climbing and scores have been finalized, an asterisk (*) will be added next to the Rank of all competitors who have qualified to advance to the next round or, if it is the Final round, to the next championship event. The rules around advancement at Regional, Divisional, and National championship events can be found in section 12.12 of the Rulebook.

Team Scores

At championship events, you can view Team championship results by clicking on “Teams” to the right of the word “Final” - this will present a table showing teams in rank order based on the total number of team ranking points they currently have in the competition.  Section 3.11 of the Rules outlines how Team results are determined:

NOTE:  team ranking points may be earned by competitors who do not advance to the Final round, based on their rank in the earlier round(s)

Clicking on the number of ranking points earned by a team in a particular category will bring up a window that shows - highlighted in yellow - the competitor who was responsible for earning those points for their team and where they ranked in their category.
