Belleville Early College Application Packet 2019-2020

The Belleville Early College is a hybrid high school and college program that allows VBPS students to earn a high school diploma and an associate’s degree @ WCCCD within a three-year accelerated program.  

In order to be considered for admissions into the Belleville Early College Program, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. A completed copy of your application and contract with all signatures (p.5).
  2. Short Essays (p. 6) typed on a separate sheet of paper stapled to back of packet
  3. Two completed recommendation forms (at least one from core-content teacher) turned in by you with the rest of the packet. Your teachers should put them in the envelopes, seal, and sign them over the seal (pgs 7-10).

Belleville Early College 2020 Cohort Contract: A Three Year Commitment  

1. By signing below you are indicating your commitment to the Belleville Early College Program and you agree to fulfill all of its three year requirements (grades 11, 12 and 13 or Bonus Year).  If for any reason, at any time, you cannot continue in the program or are removed from the program based on the decisions made by the administration, you and/or your family agree to reimburse Van Buren Public Schools the full amount of tuition and other fees incurred for attempted and/or completed college courses. 

2. By signing below you understand you are responsible for paying for any classes failed or withdrawn from during the program.  I also understand that I am required to pay for all textbooks/supplies for Elective Class, but not required Cohort classes.

3. By signing below you acknowledge that students who fail a class at either BHS or WCCCD, may have their schedule reduced at WCCCD. This may affect their ability to finish with an Associate’s Degree (A.S./A.A.) in three years..

4. By signing below you acknowledge that if the student fails two (2) BHS/WCCCD classes, or attendance/tardiness becomes an issue the student can be removed from the Early College Program and you and your family agree to reimburse Van Buren Public Schools for full tuition of all classes taken during the program.

5. By signing below you acknowledge that one (1) or more disciplinary issues at WCCCD or BHS may lead to removal from the program upon the decision of administration and that you, and your family agree to reimburse Van Buren Public Schools for full tuition of all classes taken during the program.

6. By signing below you acknowledge that no Belleville Early College student shall apply for or receive financial aid while in the program. No parent may apply for any tax benefits or financial aid benefits for their students’ enrolled in Belleville Early College. This is a federal crime!

7. By signing below I acknowledge that Van Buren Public Schools is not responsible for students once they leave Belleville High School for any reason, including during transit to WCCCD.  I also understand that once a student leaves Belleville High School, they may not return to the BHS campus for any reason.

8. By signing below I acknowledge that it is each student’s responsibility to attend early college classes as they are scheduled. As part of the Early College Program, students follow the procedures and expectations of traditional college students once they leave Belleville High School and are subject to the code of conduct of Wayne County Community College.  In the event that a college class is dismissed early or is cancelled, it will not  be Belleville High  School or  Wayne County Community College’s responsibility to notify the family or to assure that the students remain on campus.

9. By signing below I give my permission for my Belleville Early College student to leave school without calling home after their BHS classes and Early College Seminar are completes.  I understand that Belleville High School is not responsible for my student once they leave the premises. I understand that if my student does not have transportation, my student is permitted to stay at BHS in designated school areas during this time. This is good for the first and second year of the program. I understand that my student is only to be at BHS for one hour a day in the bonus year of the program.

10. By signing below I give my permission for my early college student to view portions of/or R rated movies that are deemed educationally relevant and to discuss college subjects that may be controversial or suitable for mature audiences as included in a traditional college class.

11. By signing below, I acknowledge that transportation is provided from BHS TO WCCCD on Tuesday and Thursday. Some students choose to drive themselves or ride with others. If your student forgos the opportunity for district transportation, the school is not responsible for the student or in charge of who drives or rides with each student.

12. By signing below I acknowledge that parents/guardians, as it is in a traditional college setting, may not contact WCCCD professors or instructors directly.

13. By signing below, I acknowledge that Seminar I and Seminar II are mandatory and students will receive credit (satisfactory/unsatisfactory): this credit is needed for high school graduation.  Failure to earn a (G) grade in Seminar I and Seminar II could result in removal from the program and failure to complete High School graduation requirements.

14.  Seminar II, Senior year includes a credit requirement that students complete the MEMCA Technical Certificate, and a corresponding Profolio.  This will include 20+ Volunteer hours,          40+/- Career Exploration and 10+/- hours of Job Shadowing for a combined total of 70 hours.

 Student Essays

Please respond to all five essays on a separate sheet of paper. Essays should demonstrate thoughtful responses and your very best writing ability. Each essay should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs in length.  Responses need to be typed! 

  1. List the extracurricular activities are you involved with both inside and outside of school? (sports, job, volunteer work, NHS, etc). How will you manage these activities while attending college?

  1. Why do you want to attend The Belleville Early College Program? Why do you think it’s a “good fit” for you?

  1. Describe your attendance and behavior history. Explain any absences and/or behavior problems over the last two years.

  1. What’s your greatest strength, and in what ways do you most need to grow as a person and a learner?

  1. Tell us about the person you want to be in five or ten years from now. Where do you want to be? What do you want  to be doing? What are your hopes and dreams for yourself?
