IN-HOUSE COMPETITION  'RULES' AND 'HISTORY'

President’s Cup - Men’s singles Knock-out, centre jack, 4 bowls, 21 shots

This trophy was presented to the club in 1930 by the President, C R Allder. The winner of this trophy is our men’s club champion and entered into the County Champion of Champions competition to represent the club the following season, if they wish.

Shirlie Cup - Ladies singles Knock-out, centre jack, 4 bowls, 21 shots

This trophy was presented to the club by the President,  A Edwards  in 1937 specifically for the ladies because his daughter had had the audacity to enter and win the President's Cup the previous year, much to the consternation of the male members of the club! The winner of this trophy is our ladies’ club champion and entered into the County Champion of Champions competition to represent the club the following season, if they wish.

Millennium Trophy - Open singles Knock-out, centre jack, 2 bowls, 24 ends

This trophy was presented to the club in 2000 by Gerald Brackley and was originally for club members who had not won any other club singles knockout competition. However at the 2022 AGM it was agreed to alter the criteria and form so that it is now open to all members regardless of whether or not they have previously won an in-house competition, to be played over 24 ends with 2 bowls.

Alan Clarke Cup - Open singles Knock-out,  roving jack, 3 bowls, 21 shots

This started as a pairs competition but has become a singles over the years, this differs from the other singles competition in that it is played under Cambridge & District League rules.

Anniversary Cup - Open singles, Knock-out, centre jack, 4 bowls, 105 points

This trophy was presented to the club by Mr and Mrs Roy Peppercorn to celebrate the club’s 75th anniversary in 1994. The format was first seen by a club member visiting a club in Essex which we ‘adopted’. The points system is as follows: The nearest bowl scores 4 points, the 2nd bowl scores 3 points, the 3rd 2 points and 4th 1 point regardless of whose bowl it is. Therefore 10 points are awarded and shared for each end. (Nightmare for the marker!)

Saban Salver - Open pairs, Knock-out, centre jack, 4 bowls, 21 ends

This trophy was presented by Mr and Mrs Tony Saban in 1997. It is believed that this was presented simply because, at the time, we did not have a knockout pairs competition and Jean and Tony liked to play bowls together.

Childerley Cup - Mixed pairs, One Day Tournament

This long-standing competition was apparently first contested in the late 1940s. It was played by pairs drawn at random to form the 'pair of the day'. Some strange and wonderful pairs have come together, sometimes with surprising results. However we no longer draw pairs on the day in this competition.

Allder Bowl – Open pairs, draw for partners, One Day Tournament

This is a memorial trophy presented to the club in 1998, the official name on the trophy is The Bill Allder Trophy, however we always refer to it as 'The Allder Bowl'. This is played as a drawn pairs game, and as it is an open pairs competition, people can enter as individuals. It is always hoped by the competition secretary that to make their life easier, there are an even number of entries for this competition.

Ivyland Bowl – Open singles, One Day Tournament

This trophy was presented to the club by R Wilson and was first contested in 1997. It has been contested in the past as both triples and pairs. In 2022 the format was changed to singles, hoping to get more entries.

Duckworth  Go-Nap Trophy – Open singles, One Day Tournament

This trophy was first presented to the club by Don Frost, a man who is now a life member of the club, he raised lots of money for us through the Go-Nap Horse Racing Competition in the Cambridge Evening News. His partner, Yvonne Duckworth, was a bowls club member for many years and the competition was re-named in 2017 the Duckworth Go-Nap Trophy in her memory.

Lewis Sadler Memorial Pairs  One Day Tournament (with visitor entries by invitation)

This trophy was presented to the club by Mrs Julie Sadler in memory of three bowls club members, Jim and Jean Lewis and Julie's husband Paul who all died within a relatively short time of each other. A sad time for the bowls club but now a good memory too. It was first contested in 2017, a very enjoyable day, the inaugural competition was won by the President and Competition Secretary; Alan Lock and Matthew Clark.

* Note:  The Coton Open Pairs and Cleanaway Trophy were forerunners of the Lewis Sadler Memorial Trophy.

The winners of most of the above competitions are recorded on the various Honours Boards in the clubhouse and on this website. The Horace Silk Memorial Honours Board also records past County, C&D and FMW Leagues successes.
