Description:
Health literacy is “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions” (Nielsen-Bohlman, 2004). In this course, students will take an in-depth look at how peer and environmental factors influence the health decisions that they make every day. This course will challenge students to evaluate their feelings towards different health issues, and make personal decisions about the topics presented. Students develop communication skills that allow them to demonstrate healthy choices with respect for self, family and others. This course is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to make appropriate health decisions throughout their lifespan.
Iowa Core Skills or Standards:
Topics in Health 2 are aligned with Iowa Code 12.5 and include Consumer Health, Substance Abuse and Nonuse, Injury Prevention and Safety, Social and Sexual Health, and Personal, Community, and Environmental Health.
