Procedure:

  1. Create a plan based on the work order and renovation plan. Take appropriate safety precautions and set up the correct ladders to complete the work safely.
  2. Ensure the storm window is numbered or the number will not be covered by adjustments.
  3. Work from a ladder or step stool will be required on most storm windows.
  4. Pre-drill and install the top sash hangers to the casing 4” from the casing with the bracket of the sash hanger flush with the casing header.
  5. Pre-drill and install locking hardware from exterior to reduce interior work time
  1. If installing storm adjusters, see installation instructions
  2. If the lower sash does not open, install turn buttons 8” up on the casing legs
  1. Test fit storm window to ensure an appropriate fit.
  1. 1/16” to 1/8“ reveal on each stile of the storm window.
  2. Lower rail should accommodate storm window weatherstripping
  3. No light should be visible around the perimeter of the storm window from the interior.
  1. Adjust the storm to fit, if needed, with a planer, table saw, or router.
  2. Place the storm window in the opening.
  3. Hook the bottom sash hanger to the top sash hanger.
  4. Check the reveal of the storm window in the opening.
  5. Pre-drill and install a lower sash hanger to the storm window while pulling the storm tight to the header or using a flat pry bar to lift the storm
  6. Leave hardware on the home. Load storms for completion at Old Home Rescue

Contact Neighbor en route with estimated time of arrival

Layout storm windows according to Renovation Plan or Floor Plan

Attach storm window hangers and turn buttons and/or adjusters

Hang storm window from hangers

Ensure no daylight can be see from interior

Make stile adjustments, if needed, for 1/16-⅛” reveal on sides

9

Make rail adjustments, if needed, for weatherstripping to fit appropriately

10

Ensure windows are labeled after adjustments

11

Attach turn buttons, if used on project

13

Clean up all debris and sawdust from Neighbor’s yard or driveway

14

Walk through project to ensure dry fit is completed

15

Leave male hangers and turn buttons on home, if used

16

Storm windows are loaded and returned to OHR for completion
