Disability Studies and Music Education Symposium

Spring 2019 - Present

Launched a new, interdisciplinary symposium in order to provide a space for contemporary researchers in music education to explore the potentials that disability studies literature can provide for critical research and inclusive pedagogy. The initial symposium was funded through the support of multiple campus partners, including the Office of Disability Services, the Office of Access and Inclusion,  the Office of Cross-disciplinary Studies and Diversity Engagement,  JMU Libraries, Leslie Flanary Gilliam Center for Entrepreneurship, and Disability Studies faculty. The second symposium, to occur in 2021, will be funded by Upton Bass. As part of organizing this symposium, I engaged in the following:

• Identifying and working with the keynote speakers.
• Identifying other music education researchers who have drawn on disability studies in their work and inviting them to participate as speakers. This eventually yielded presentations by Dr. Adam Bell or the University of Calgary, Dr. Elizabeth Parker of the Temple University sharing her work with Dr. Bridge Sweet of the University of Illinois, Dr. Warren Churchill of New York University-Abu Dhabi, and Martin Urbach of New York Public Schools working with Emily Veramessa of James Madison University.
• Arranging and assisting in travel and housing arrangements for presenters.
• Finding and securing funding for inclusive services such as American Sign Language Interpreters and Communication Access Real-time Translation.
• Organizing Web-Ex and ZOOM platforms to encourage tele-presence attendance.
• Designing and disseminating advertisement materials.  
• Organizing student leaders to introduce presenters, record presentations, and handle other aspects of the day-of occurrences.
• Collaborating with JMU Libraries to develop a digital archive space for presentation videos.

Provided advisory assistance for multiple facets of the James Madison University Office of Disability Services Tenth Anniversary Disability Awareness Week. As part of this series of events, I identified and helped the planning team select a musician and music scholar as the keynote speaker. The team selected Dr. Alex Lubet of the University of Minnesota as the presenter. I worked with Dr. Lubet along with other university groups to develop programming and I worked with Dr. Christine Liu of Libraries and Instructional Design to craft a campus-wide disability awareness assignment to go along with Dr. Lubet’s work.

• Collaborator/Co-Investigator for Facilitating Anti-Ableist Remote Music Making – Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Grant (Awarded 450000 CAD)

• The purpose of the Facilitating Anti-Ableist Remote Music Making (FAARMM) project is to use the multisensory modality of music to examine and share experiences of disability intersectionality. FAARMM is a partnership between three not-for-profit disability arts organizations and a transdisciplinary team of academics with expertise in music, disability, and technology. The project will produce accessible remote music-making instruments and activities, and examine how they embed, reflect, and express intersectional disability experiences. Using digital ethnography and multisensory storytelling approaches to share participants’ experiences, FAARMM entails three phases:
• Consult: 25 participants will leverage their lived experiences as expertise to consult with the team to identify accessible remote music instrument and activity designs.
• Create: Informed by the consultations, five experienced artists with disabilities will lead the designs of multisensory instrument “kits” that will be co-created with the academic team. These prototypes will be piloted by the 25 participants.
• Circulate: 100 participants across Canada will take part in a remote residency program in which they will receive a kit to play and share their experiences in/through/with music (e.g., podcasts, videos, live streams).
