My Speech

We should do everything we can to save our native flora and fauna

Did you know New Zealand native flora and fauna numbers are going down at an alarming speed. We should do everything we can to save our native flora and fauna.

We should save our native flora and fauna so animals and plants don't become extinct and we can increase native flora and fauna populations. Why? Because they are important to our environment they also endemic to New Zealand. Some examples are the kiwi and the morepork are all part of the food web. We want our kids to see theeak native flora and fauna and environment.

So what can we do to save our native flora and fauna Because stoats rats mice and other predators are killing native plants and animals. Set up traps in sheds and fence lines and anywhere you think pests are so we can eradicate pests with DoC200s and good nature traps. Use gotcha tunnels and ink pads to monitor pests. cats and dogs inside at night because they kill Native birds and chicks. Keep your dog on a leash and cats wearing a colourful collar.

What else can we do to save our native flora and fauna. Plant more native trees and bushes such as flax, pohutukawa trees, kowhai trees and the hebi. Why? So we can save our native flora and fauna. Planting trees let's small birds nest. So the population rises and more habitats for native flora and fauna and shelter from pests and weather. They give more food for native animals such as honey dew for the tui. David Attenborough said: forests are the air conditioning system, the lungs of the planet and we are on the verge of switching it off.

An example of doing everything we can to save our native flora and fauna is Nga Manu waiata. Nga Manu waiata uses their spare time to eradicate pests in Wainui and Makorori area. They volunteer to do this so please encourage them.

In conclusion, I encourage you to set more traps in our community . Put them in places you think pests are to get rid of predators and to help save are native flora fauna.
