Gregory W. Haas

July 6, 1948 - September 27, 2019

Gregory W. Haas of Bloomington died suddenly on Friday, September 27, 2019 at the age of 71. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Glanzer.

Greg was born to Flora and Charles Haas, Sr. on July 6, 1948 in Cincinnati, the eldest of four children. He attended La Salle High School (‘66) and Xavier University.

From his youth, Greg was committed to the cause of social justice and peace, and dedicated his life to causes directed toward creating a better, healthier and more peaceful world. He was an enthusiastic naturalist, zealously concerned about the preservation and enjoyment of natural places, an insatiable learner and a devoted and generous friend.

While working as a carpenter on low-income housing projects in Cincinnati’s historic and poverty-stricken Over-The-Rhine neighborhood, Greg met Dorothy Glanzer, a nurse providing health-care to underprivileged residents. Sharing concerns for social justice, world peace and creating community, they married in 1983 in a celebration officiated by Rev. Maurice McCrackin, Cincinnati’s well-known anti-war and social-justice activist. In 1989 the couple moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where Greg was a member of the Bloomington Friends Meeting, a Quaker religious community, and the Unitarian Universalist Church.

Greg is survived by: Cindy (Haas) Potter and the late Jim Potter of Burlington, Kentucky; Charles Haas, Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; Linda (Haas) and Greg Hand of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven nieces and nephews; his in-laws, Moses and the late Reva Glanzer of Freeman, South Dakota; Lu Ann Glanzer of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Nancy and Jeff Fischer of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Mark and Margaret Glanzer of Canistota, South Dakota.

A celebration of Greg’s life and works will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2019 at the Bloomington, Indiana, Unitarian Universalist Church.

A second memorial service will be held in Greg’s hometown at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 10, 2019 at the Madcap Education Center, 3064 Harrison Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Greg’s memory to Mt. Gilead Friends Retreat, 3363 Mt. Gilead Rd., Bloomington, IN 47408 or Unitarian Universalist Church, 2120 N. Fee Lane, Bloomington IN 47408, or to the charity of your choice.
