Course Description: Cadet Band is a lab course in music reading, comprehension, expression, and performance on their selected instrument.  Students will learn how to read music notation (pitch, rhythm, articulation, etc.).  Students will play their instrument in an individual setting and in a group setting.  Students will strive to achieve the characteristic tone of their instrument.

Music Listening

Year Long

  • Experience various performances of artists through classical, jazz,  and contemporary genres.

Note Reading

Year Long

  • Identify notes on the clef of their instrument.
  • Read and play basic notes (at least an octave) on their instrument

Rhythm

Year Long

  • Rhythm Concepts - explore, identify, and use rhythmic concepts of steady beat, tempo, and beat patterns.
  • Steady Beat - explore the concept of steady beat in various tempos.  Identify and demonstrate a steady beat.
  • Duration - identify and interpret  the following durations:  Whole, Dotted-Half, Half, Quarter, Eighth, and Sixteenth notes and corresponding rests.
  • Rhythm Patterns - identify and perform various rhythmic patterns using note duration skills.
  • Performance - demonstrate basic skill in reading, writing, identifying, and performing various rhythm patterns.

Tone

  • Strive to achieve the characteristic tone of their instrument

Practice

  • Develop good practice habits.  Routine and discipline.
