 Cox Elementary Parent Meeting Recap

Chehaw Animal Presentation – October 14, 2025

5:00 p.m.

Parents and families who attended our meeting had the exciting opportunity to experience a

live animal presentation from Chehaw Park and Zoo! Guests met several fascinating

creatures and learned interesting facts about their habitats, behaviors, and adaptations.

Here’s a quick recap of what we learned:

 Ferret

- Ferrets are part of the weasel family and are known for their playful, curious nature.

- They have long, slender bodies that help them move easily through tunnels.

- Ferrets are carnivores and primarily eat meat such as small rodents.

- They are very social animals and love to explore and burrow.

Pancake Tortoise

- The pancake tortoise is named for its flat, flexible shell, which allows it to squeeze into tight

rocky crevices.

- It lives in East Africa, where it hides among rocks to stay safe from predators.

- Unlike most tortoises, it can move quickly and even climb short distances.

- It eats grasses and leafy plants, making it a herbivore.

Ball Python Snake

- This python is known for its brilliant blue scales, a rare color variation that makes it truly

striking.

- It is non-venomous and captures prey by wrapping around and constricting it.

- Native to the rainforests of New Guinea and Indonesia, it often rests coiled on branches.

- Blue pythons are excellent climbers and rely on camouflage to avoid predators.

 Blue-Tongue Skink

- The blue-tongue skink gets its name from its bright blue tongue, which it sticks out to scare

away predators.

- It is found in Australia and Indonesia and enjoys basking in the sun.

- Skinks are omnivores, eating fruits, vegetables, and insects.

- They are gentle reptiles and often tolerate being handled when cared for properly.

Thank You, Chehaw Park and Zoo!

We appreciate Chehaw’s dedication to wildlife education and conservation. Their visit gave

families a chance to learn about the wonders of nature and the importance of protecting

animal habitats.
