May 20, 2019

Immediately Following Special Meeting

 

        

I.           RECONVENE FROM SPECIAL MEETING

A.   RECOGNITION:

The board recognized two students for National Merit Finalist honors: Nathan Wichers - Zeeland West (Greg Eding)  and Leah Heneveld - Zeeland East (Jessica Knoth).  Both were presented with certificates from the Board of Education.

Todd Kamstra was honored for his leadership and dedication to the Zeeland Action Coalition, and for his work on mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and so many community awareness activities partnering with the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan/benice.

The board honored the following retirees: Administrators: Kelly Rademacher-Facilities Director, Judy Tuttle - Roosevelt Principal; Teachers: Marlene Bredeway - Woodbridge, Kevin Crinion-ZW, Mary Elhart - Cityside, Tricia Kamer - Creekside, Mary Kraai - Quincy, Bill Meeuwsen - ZW, Sharon Schrotenboer-Quincy, Rhonda Vredeveld - Cityside; Transportation: Mary Bahm, Jean Livingston, Delwyn Ritsema; Support Staff: Alice Chidester - Administration, Cheryl Havinga - Roosevelt Parapro, Karen Larder - New Groningen Parapro, Deb Oonk - Creekside.

        

B.   ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF VISITORS:  Al Dannenberg addressed the board to thank them for all they do for Zeeland Public Schools.                                  

 

II.          SUPERINTENDENT COMMENTS

A.         Art Te Leen - ZPS and local businesses partner to provide our top art students to be noticed and honored by showcasing their art and allowing the businesses to lease the art for one year. The program is in year three, and is so successful, there are more buyers than there is artwork.  

B.         Zeeland Education Foundation Grant Awards - ZPS is so grateful for the ZEF and leaders, Sara Stevens & Nikki Kleinheksel, and an incredibly generous community.   The Foundation recently gifted just over $43,000  in grants to ZPS staff, and $37,000 to the district through Dr. Mendham.  The total amount over time is   $600,000 since 2007.

Tom DenHerder moved and Ron Scott supported the motion to approve the consent agenda as presented.

VOTE:  ALL YES (6)

 

V.     DISCUSSION

A.        Bus Purchases - Lynn VanKampen reviewed upcoming bus purchases which will be paid for by bond funds.  To continue to replace six per year as needed, the district will use enhancement millage funds, which has been put aside for that purpose.  They will be purchased in the near future so they will be here by the start of school.

B.        Huizenga Park Youth Girls Softball Complex will be a unique West Michigan style partnership between the City of Zeeland and Zeeland Public Schools.  Additionally, Gentex is a major funder There are two fields, with batting cages, dugouts, a playground, sound systems, and scoreboards.  The ZPS portion of the costs is $28,000 from 2018-19 Recreation budget, $70,000 from the 2019-20 Recreation budget, and up to $50,000 from Recreation fund balance (if needed, pending further donations).   Gentex has funded $210,000 and the City of Zeeland is funding $150,000.  

 

VI.           ACTION:

A.             OAISD BUDGET APPROVAL RESOLUTION

Ron Scott moved and Tom DenHerder supported the motion to approve the resolution (supporting) the 2019-20 General Fund Budget of the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District.

 

          VOTE: ALL YES (6)

B.        OAISD BOARD ELECTION RESOLUTION APPROVAL

Mark Snyder moved and Tom DenHerder supported the motion the approve April DeWitt as the representative, and Tom DenHerder as the alternate, to cast their vote for candidates Rick Dernberger and Ron Eding to fill the vacancy on the OAISD board in the June 3 election.  

ROLL CALL:           YEA: Brennan, DeWitt, Dernberger, DenHerder, Scott, Snyder

                         NAY:

         C.        BUS BID APPROVAL

Tom DenHerder moved and Mark Snyder supported the motion to approve the purchase of six new school buses as discussed.

VOTE: ALL YES (6)

D.         HUIZENGA PARK PROJECT APPROVAL 

Tom DenHerder moved and Todd Brennan supported the motion to approve Lakewood Construction as the contractor for the Huizenga Park Project as discussed.

VOTE: ALL YES (6)
