Letter from the Principal
Dear SMS Raiders,
The SMS Program of Studies describes the courses offered at Somerset Middle School. All students are automatically enrolled in the required grade level courses, meaning mathematics, English Language Arts (ELA), science, social studies, physical education, wellness, and technology. All grade six students are enrolled in exploratory art and general music but may also choose to participate in any of our music ensembles. Grade seven and eight students are also enrolled in general music but can select their art courses along with any of the music ensembles and advanced art. Seventh and eighth grade students also have the opportunity to take exploratory Spanish. Eighth graders can also elect a fifth core academic, Spanish I, in the 2025-2026 school year.
Although numerous related arts courses are described in the Program of Studies, the specific related arts courses that run each school year are determined by student interest. During the course selection process, students are provided course ballots that list the potential courses available to their grade level. Students select the courses they are interested in and rank those selections in order of preference. The related arts courses with the highest student interest will run each school year.
Additionally, some related arts courses are identified as “enrichment courses”. The enrichment courses may be offered during the period 7 WIN block. The What I Need (WIN) block provides students with necessary curriculum content remediation, as evidenced by student assessment data and class performance, or offers students enrichment opportunities if they do not require remediation in a particular subject. The music ensembles and advanced art are also offered during the period 7 WIN block.
I encourage all SMS Raiders to review the course descriptions in the Program of Studies and contact teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators with any questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kerri McKinnon
SMS Principal
Somerset Middle School
Mission
The mission of Somerset Middle School is to respond to each adolescent’s intellectual, physical, and emotional needs. Diversity is the basis of a sound middle school program. The function of our educational program is student-centered. The children are the basis for every decision made at Somerset Middle School.
Our efforts will focus on challenging children intellectually. We seek to develop necessary social and civic skills, stimulate emotional growth, and have the children more aware of the physical changes taking place during early adolescence. A commitment to involve parents in all aspects of their child’s education is a necessity. The pride and respect the children feel for the school and themselves will be carried by them into the community itself.

Science
Grade 6 Science
Students relate complex systems to their functionality and understand that substructures also have shapes and parts that serve functions. This concept is covered throughout the 6th-grade science curriculum. Within the Earth Science discipline, students analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of past plate motions to explain how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface over geological time. In the discipline of physical science, students develop and use a model to describe how waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. Students also integrate qualitative scientific and technical information to support the claim that the structure of digitized signals makes it a more reliable way to encode and transmit information than analog signals. The properties of matter such as density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, flammability, and odor are explored, which aids students in understanding how matter behaves. In the discipline of Life Science, students develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and the ways the parts of cells contribute to the function. This idea is extended as students learn the structure of the human body and how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells.
Grade 7 Science
Students in grade 7 focus on systems and cycles using their understanding of structures and functions, connections and relationships in systems, and the flow of matter and energy developed in earlier grades. The year begins with a foundational study of how energy transfers and transforms in their everyday lives. Students will then explore the Solar System and Beyond. Students will use models and simulations to gain a better understanding of the cycles of moon phases, eclipses, seasons, and tides. Students will then analyze the structure and function of different materials based on their physical and chemical properties. Finally, students will explore how energy and matter flow through ecosystems.
Grade 8 Science
Eighth grade students will develop their ability to apply the cross-cutting concept of cause and effect relationships between the topics of genetics, evolution, force and motion, weather, and climate. Students will explore the following scientific phenomena: the inheritance of traits, organization of genetic material, evidence to support evolutionary relationships, Newton's Laws of Motion, heat transfer throughout Earth's atmosphere/oceans, and human impact on Earth's climate.
