Wishlist Guidelines & Best Practices for Gift Recipients

Romancelandia Holiday Fairies

Romancelandia Holiday Fairies (RHF) is a mutual aid effort for the Romancelandia romance novel reader community to support anyone in the community who could use help with purchasing gifts for themselves or loved ones this holiday season.

RHF was started in 2020 and has run every year since. Since 2020, the romance community has supported hundreds of wishlists and purchased thousands of gifts.

The program is administered by Andrea Martucci (host of Shelf Love romance novel podcast) with help from a Holiday Fairy admin. You can email holidayfairy@shelflovepodcast.com with any questions.

Create Wishlist in Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=GHCGC7B7SQ222YMD

Check Sharing Settings: set to Shared & Copy Link

In the wishlist, click the Invite button, and select View Only, then Copy link.

This is the link you must submit in the Google Form.

After you copy the link, the list should change to “Shared.”

More info: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?ref_=hp_left_v4_sib&nodeId=GPWMKQXXSBT8NAHN

Manage List Settings:

While you’re in your wishlist, click the 3 dots next to More in the upper right corner and select “Manage List.

Ensure Privacy is set to Shared.

Recipient: this information will be visible

Email: will not be displayed

Manage List settings: Add delivery email for any digital orders

Description: This information will be displayed at the top of your wishlist - it’s a good place to add your email for digital order delivery if you have any digital items, like gift cards or ebooks.

See example in screenshot for how Description information shows up at the top of wishlists.

Manage List settings: Confirm Shipping Address

Shipping Address: This area MUST have your correct shipping address (in the image where you see “None”)

The full address will be hidden from everyone, and only the gift giver will see the name entered in the Address Name field when they purchase. I believe they may also be able to see the city and state where the item will be shipped.

Manage List settings: Options

Please de-select both of the check boxes:

UNCHECK both:

  • "Keep purchased items on your list"
  • "Don't Spoil My Surprises" (spoiler settings)

Unchecking both will ensure that purchased items will be hidden from holiday fairies looking for gifts to purchase.

Check Visibility of your other wishlists

If you have other Public wishlists in your account, they will be visible to anyone clicking through. Make other lists private if you'd like to keep them hidden.

Submitting to Holiday Fairies

Submit your wishlist using the Google Form here

Responses automatically populate in the spreadsheet that is visible for gift givers.

  1. Make sure you submit using a valid email address that you check regularly.
  1. You will receive a confirmation email with a link that will allow you to make changes to your original submission, if necessary.
  2. This is the email that will be used to contact you to troubleshoot any issues.
  1. Wishlist link: Submit the link that was generated when you created a shareable link from the Invite area.
  1. I recommend opening your wishlist link(s) in an incognito browser (where you’re not logged in to your account) to test that you have provided the PUBLIC link before submitting. This ensures Holiday Fairies can buy you gifts!

  1. Please do not submit more than one wishlist, or the same wishlist multiple times.
  2. If you need to edit your wishlist submission, you will receive an email with your response and a link to Edit Response.

  1. After you submit your wishlist, visit the wishlist page to check to make sure it shows up. Give it a few minutes and refresh the page. It shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to become visible: https://shelflovepodcast.com/holiday-fairies

Promoting Wishlists

Wishlists will be listed on Shelf Love's website for gift givers to access:

Tips for Success

FAQs

Why Amazon wishlists? I hate to support Amazon!

Amazon wishlists are simply the easiest and most universal way to share wishlists without displaying personal information like addresses to the public. Many people add to Amazon wishlists throughout the year, which makes it easy to submit a wishlist.

I’m not a huge fan of Amazon and its business practices either, but I also value privacy and I’m not going to let perfect be the enemy of good.

In previous years, wishlist recipients had the option to to submit wishlists through another service called Things To Get Me, which does allow for hiding address information - however it requires an additional fee for the gift buyer and delays because the gift is shipped twice (from the retailer to Things To Get Me, then to the recipient). Over the 3 years this was offered, wishlist recipients never leveraged this alternative, so I've removed it from the form to streamline the process for recipients and gift givers.

Why do you need names and email addresses for wishlist submissions?

Your name and email will NOT be listed publicly and will only be used by Andrea Martucci and/or a Holiday Fairy support admin to contact you about wishlist administration tasks and updates.

This will also enable you to receive a copy of your response and confirmation email that will allow you to edit your submission later.

Archived Help Notes

(Note: Amazon seems to be having issues with sending addresses to third parties right now, which means you should add "Prime," sold by Amazon items as much as possible - I've heard some people aren't given the option to purchase items from wishlists if they aren't Prime/sold by Amazon.)

I recommend you select "Share my shipping address with sellers" if you have items on your list from third party sellers, however please note that there may be issues with this that are beyond our control.
