Setting the Stage

Over the past several months, hundreds of students have signed up for Helping Hands’ services. Your role will be working on the volunteer placement matching system to help students find somewhere to complete their minimum 40 Community Involvement Hours. You will build features that users request as well as handling production support. This is a position where you can take charge and help shape a young organization. It will be a mix of remote/office. We are looking for a team oriented developer with great problem solving skills.


Works on development and enhancement of front end to support new features as requested by team or end users.

Works on adding and enhancing functionality of the platform that matches youth to volunteer positions in the community used by various marginalized populations- newcomer and refugee youth, youth who have not previously been employed and for whom this would be their first job experience, Youth with Disabilities, Youth who have not completed high School, Visible minorities and LGBTQ2 youth. This includes database changes to support functionality.

Use React and Ruby on Rails to interface with backend.

Use Rails code to interface with database and provide information to users.

Work on developing a iOS/Android app from the ground up.

Connect app to server and interface with api.

Provide support on production issues as needed.

Learning/ Career Development Opportunities

Student will have the opportunity to take the lead on creating techniques to reach out to youth, help them navigate the system and more. This is well suited for students in programs such as  but not limited to Social and community service professionals aka Community Worker – Outreach and Development, Child and Youth Care Practitioners , Education students, Counseling students.

This job is funded by Canada Summer Jobs, therefore the requirements are:

Position Details

Max 10 weeks

40 hours/ week at $15/ hour plus vacation pay.
