YOUTH MENTORING NEWSLETTER | Allamakee, Howard, Winneshiek

March 2020

 LET’S ROCK AT THE BOWL-A-THON .

It’s time for the Rock ‘N’ Bowl Mentoring Bowl-A-Thon on March 21!

Now is the time to register! Bowling times are 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. Teams consist of four bowlers, however, if you don’t have four, register those wishing to bowl and we will fill out your team. Bowlers are asked to collect or donate $25 or more to support Youth Mentoring. This event is our biggest fundraiser! Fundraising can be a fun way to share the impact mentoring has had on you. In the fundraising packet, there are directions on how to get far away friends and family to support mentoring.

On March 21, you may want to get into the theme by wearing your leather jacket, tie-dye shirt, and shades. Thanks to our sponsors!

I’m Jane and I live in Lansing and I am 13 years old. I enjoy football, bike riding, soccer, and singing. When I grow up, I want to be a vet.

 UPCOMING RECRUITMENT EFFORTS  .

Youth Mentoring staff is always busy. One thing we never stop doing is coming up with new ways to recruit mentors. Currently in Allamakee, Howard, and Winneshiek County, we have 22 youth ready and waiting for a mentor. In the upcoming months, you will see:

  • Popcorn stickers on popcorn bags at some local schools
  • Materials in area churches including messages in bulletins and newsletters
  • A Mentoring Social will be offered in Howard County

At any time, if you know of someone who would be interested in mentoring, please have them visit with Kathy or Colinne.

 MENTORING NIGHT AT CULVER’S RESULTS.

On Wednesday, January 22, mentoring participants got to serve the community at Culver’s in Decorah. We want to thank all the friends of mentoring and community members who came out and supported Youth Mentoring on a very snowy night!

Thank you Culver’s for this opportunity and the support you give Youth Mentoring!  Youth Mentoring was fortunate to receive 10% of all sales from dine-in and carry-out.

It was fun to see so many current and former mentors, mentees, parents, family members, and community friends who gathered to dine and support us. Bear Buckets collected donations from generous customers. We are honored at the great turn out and the support of $388.00 for the evening. Thank You!

 APRIL TRAINING: GENERATION RX .

On April 16, mentors, Mentors For A Day, parents/guardians, health care providers, school officials, and everyone interested in health are invited to join Youth Mentoring at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon for this educational training, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

All are invited to attend this training to learn more about prescription drug safety in order to prevent the misuse of prescription medications. This educational program includes a presentation and Q & A session to educate adults about four “key messages” for safe medication practices. More information about this opportunity will be published within our April newsletter. Please RSVP by Monday, April 13 to Kathy or Colinne.
