Contract Job Posting: Digital Communications Coordinator

$26-30/hour, depending on experience. Initial six month part-time contract with

anticipated expansion to full time

Voor Urban Labs provides technical support for broader movements for decolonization, social change and climate justice locally in Vancouver and across Canada. Our team specializes in critical urban research, urban planning, and community engagement work. Join us in this unique communications and production role supporting local and national projects for advancing public policy and social infrastructure that addresses social and environmental challenges across Canada.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated person to join our team as a specialist in communications and production. Based out of Coast Salish lands/Vancouver, you will support a team working from Vancouver, Nanaimo, Toronto, Ottawa, and Mexico. Reporting to the Voor Director, you will help maintain production schedules and complete tasks so projects run smoothly. Your hybrid work week will be up to 50:50 in-person and remote-work to produce, organize and track tasks and projects, collaborating with coworkers on exciting and meaningful projects. A major focus for you will be urban Indigenous communities, however, you will also support other Voor clients addressing the climate crisis, environmental and social infrastructure and urban policy in BC.

Special emphasis for this position is serving in a key Voor Urban Labs’ role providing technical support services for the National Urban Indigenous Coalitions Council (NUICC). NUICC is a growing network of coalitions working to advance the rights and visibility of the urban Indigenous population across Canada. You will assist in supporting the delivery of communications, research and event production services for this growing platform for urban Indigenous Peoples in 32 cities. The Coordinator will prioritize communications and media production support to NUICC, including management of social media channels and production assistance for the Knowledge Mobilisation Hub events, notably the ‘Stories Have Always Been Our Governance’ Series, using advanced Zoom tools. You will provide critical production support for NUICC engagement activities with a growing network of caucuses and urban Indigenous formations across Canada.  

Time Commitment

Three days per week (21 hrs) flexible part-time with work days flexing, balancing your own family’s needs and the project work. Some evening and weekend work anticipated, and some travel may be required out of province. In-person work will be conducted in respect to provincial health guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Carry-out communications and cross-media work including; visual and written media production (video editing, photography, copywriting), social media management (scheduled and spontaneous postings, visual templates, style guides etc.);
• Support pre- and post-events video editing, graphic production and social media management;
• Ensure timely “newsletter” updates to NUICC website with blog posts
• Support content production and management of NUICC Social Media accounts
• Participate in short- and long-term planning aligned with goals set by Director and client;
• Support contact database development and maintenance
• Transform communications strategies into actionable steps, launching and carry out a full campaign;
• Collaborate on production work with communications and research team members;
• Work with client staff, external collaborators and partners that contribute to our production and workflow;
• Bring your lived experience of urban Indigenous Peoples and decolonization into the work;
• Support the production logistics for virtual, remote or in-person events, including but not limited to: coordinating and booking speakers, venues, travel, and english/french translation/interpretation logistics, online streaming technical support, and
• Other duties as assigned.

Skills

• You have lived or work experience working within complex social problems, conducting social justice campaigns, and working with communities on their solutions;  
• Work experience in communications and media production for impactful projects;
• May have formal education in communications, Indigenous studies, urban planning, sociology, human geography, political economy, anthropology, or a related field;
• Excellent knowledge of urban Indigenous issues and policy solutions for Canadian cities;
• Excellent understanding of the role of storytelling and Indigenous Knowledge;
• Very strong organization, communication and writing skills; critical thinker, problem-solver, and
• Leading, delegating and tracking work using Slack, Google Suite, and scheduling meetings.

Optional Skills

• Familiarity of local government and urban public policy; Knowledge of Indigenous governance systems; Experience with community-engaged research, writing, organizational development, and strategy work; Experience in arts, culture, journalism, or communications
