Social Studies – 2nd Grade

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Social Studies curriculum consists of the implementation of thematic units through the incorporation of instructional lessons, and individualized projects allowing students to learn about the world around them-past, present, and future-through geography, economics, and citizenship.

Students will be able to…

Identify a hero from the past.

Identify the significance of various monuments.

Identify holidays observed in our country and their significance.

Read and create a timeline.

Identify various landforms on a map.

Identify bodies of water on a map.

Draw a map of their community.

Identify various goods and services.

Identify a career and understand what education is needed.

Identify rules in the classroom.

Work in a group setting.

Describe the different roles people play in their family,  school and community.

Identify the signs of a good citizen.

      Identify various roles/jobs in town and who does them.

Identify various needs in their community and list solutions.

Compare roles and responsibilities in their home community and their school community.

      Identify age appropriate jobs within a family.

Identify a solution to a problem or a situation.

Compare and contrast families/cultures around the world.

Past and Present:  Celebrating our country’s history and heroes of the past with their contributions to world history.

Looking at the Earth: Looking at our country’s physical environment and how people interact with it.

People at Work:  Identifying goods and services and the people who provide them and understand how people are both producers and consumers.

Living in a community:  Exploring the different groups that live in a community.  Discovering ways in which we can work together and be good citizens.

Learn about People:  Exploring the diversity of people in the United States and identify and appreciate examples of various cultures within their own community.

The Government:  Exploring their local, state, and national government.
