6th Grade Newsletter (October 2017)

Dear 6th Grade Families,

Below you will get information about what your scholars are doing in each class and what events the whole grade can look forward to. Please enjoy!

Class to Class - What’s Being Learned in the 6th Grade Hallway

ELA - Mr. Pearsall - jpearsall@motthall2.org

6R/6B - Ms. Nam - kkim@motthall2.org

We just completed our Notice and Note bootcamp. We will start to apply the Notice and Note reading strategies as we begin reading our first novel, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick.

Math - Ms. Tapada - etapada@motthall2.org

6R/6B - Mr. Kahan - jkahan@motthall2.org

We are currently working on our GCF and LCM unit. Students are going to apply their knowledge of arithmetic to break down numbers into factor pairs using multiplication. After that, we are going to dive right into our next unit: Operations with Fractions.

Science - Ms. Acevedo - yacevedo@motthall2.org

6R/6B - Ms. Nam - kkim@motthall2.org

We are currently working on our Nature of Science Unit. We are going to focus on the Scientific Method and how to follow each step in order to carry out scientific investigations. We will begin with our straw rocket experiment, where scholars will change one variable and test their experiment to see which straw rocket travels the farthest.

Social Studies - Ms. Breach - lbreach@motthall2.org

6R/6B - Mr. Kahan - jkahan@motthall2.org

We are starting our second unit on Early Humans and Mesopotamia.  Students will be learning about the elements of a civilization and will end their unit by writing an advertisement for Mesopotamia.

Message from Ms.Robbins (School Counselor)

jrobbins@motthall.org

Hello Mott Hall II families!  I am thrilled to announce that our 1st Hurricane Committee meeting went off with a huge success!  There were almost 30 scholars that came to the first meeting, with tons of ideas, awesome energy and massive support!  Our next meeting is Monday, Oct 16th at 2:45 to 3:30.  We will be flushing out ideas on how to raise money for Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas.  Stay tuned for how you will be able to support our efforts!  Any questions/ideas, or if you want to help, please email me at jrobbins@motthall2.org

On the Calendar - Upcoming Events

Oct. 20 - Last day to submit Lunch Forms for

Extended Recess

Oct. 9 - No School (Columbus Day)

  • Please make sure to complete Lunch Forms, either through the paper form or online. Students whose families submit lunch forms by October 20th will receive an Extended Recess.
  • Engrade logins have been sent home last month. Check your scholar’s Engrade account for missing assignments and remind them to check regularly on their own. Missing assignments will be accepted up to ten (10) school days after they are due for partial credit. Math assignments will only be accepted the following day. Turning in missing work is much better than receiving a 0. If your scholar loses their password they can get it from Ms. Robbins.
  • Ashley Farms Fundraiser packets have been distributed to scholars last week. Please be on the lookout for it, along with any other forms distributed to your child. Funds collected through this fundraiser will be used to help pay for your child’s 6th grade end-of-year trip. More information on the trip will be shared as it becomes available.

Sincerely,

6th Grade Team (Acevedo, Breach, Kahan, Nam, Pearsall, Tapada)
