I write to inform you about an upcoming preparation program for the Sacrament of Reconciliation that will occur at St Michael’s Catholic Church Meadowbank during October and November this year. If your child is in year 2 (or in year 3 or year 4 and has not yet participated in Catholic sacramental programs), then I invite you to consider enrolling your child to learn about and to receive this beautiful sacrament.
Learning to say sorry and to feel forgiven for our failings is a gift and an experience that every human should receive. The Sacrament of Reconciliation starts a new chapter in the faith life of a Christian. Unlike the sacraments of Baptism or Confirmation which are received only once, reconciliation is a sacrament that can be received as often as one needs, both for children and for adults. Being the first sacrament received after Baptism, the sacrament of reconciliation invites a person to enter into another dimension in their relationship with God: a deeper understanding of God’s unconditional love and forgiveness. In the Archdiocese of Sydney, this sacrament is usually first received by children in Year 2 or older, who have been baptised.
If your child has not yet been baptised, please know that our parish is happy to welcome your child for baptism prior to the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation.
Parent Formation Meeting - Tuesday 4 September at 7pm in the Fr Bush Parish Hall
The program will begin with a Parent Formation Evening. This is an essential part of the program and is FOR PARENTS ONLY. At least one parent of every enrolled child is to attend. During this gathering, I will discuss faith, reconciliation and the process that our parish undertakes in preparing and welcoming children into the family of God. Please know that you are welcome to come even if you aren’t sure about enrolling for this program.
Reconciliation Enrolment Masses: Saturday 15 September (6pm) and Sunday 16 September (8am and 10am)
Enrolment Masses will be held on the weekend of 15/16 September. Children intending to enrol in the program are asked to attend one of these Masses and to be prayed over during the Mass. All enrolments need to be received on this weekend so that effective planning can take place prior to the program beginning in October.
Please complete the Reconciliation Enrolment Form prior to attending the enrolment Mass by going to the parish website and following the enrolment link or by clicking on this link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1bLC-uRAj2EfTy0CzILcS1nl-PJWIBqnqNfnm3W-q_kE/edit
At the conclusion of the enrolment Masses, please submit the enrolment fee of $30 to the sacramental team along with a copy of your child’s Baptismal Certificate. If your child belongs to one of the Eastern Catholic Rites (Maronite, etc), then you will also need to obtain a letter from the church of baptism to give permission for St Michael’s to prepare and give your child the sacrament at St Michael’s.
Reconciliation Program - Tuesdays at 7pm in Parish Hall
Candidates and at least one parent are to attend the 4 preparation sessions on 23, 30 October and 6, 13 November. Candidates will also need to attend and participate in Sunday Masses during the program as the Masses will draw on elements of the weekly classes. Your role as parents is crucial in the faith life of your child and I thank you for all that you have done so far to help your child develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This program is a wonderful opportunity for you to also develop your own faith and I look forward to journeying and praying with you over the coming months.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated this year on 27 and 28 November from 4.30pm.
For any enquiries, please contact our sacramental leaders via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phoning Marisa on 0402 902 871 or Liz on 0412 802 025
May God bless you and your family at this special time.
