Assignments for Independent Study

Where Are You From? Cities, Countries, Nationalities

  1. Watch the video Places: Cities in Western Turkey: “Bursa” (English).
  2. Listen to the dialogue in ET Unit 4, Section 1: Conversation: Nerelisiniz? Then read it ALOUD to yourself at least twice.
  3. Read through ET Unit 4, Section 2: Countries and Nationalities. Be sure to read the word for each new country and nationality ALOUD to yourself at least twice.
  4. Complete Vocabulary Building Exercise: “Cities, Countries, and Nationalities.”
  5. Dünya Haritası (World Map): Look at a map of the world, and try to name every country (and corresponding nationality) aloud in Turkish as you point to it. Make lists of the countries you have visited and would like to visit. What nationalities are your friends? What about your favorite authors or musicians?
  6. Read through Unit 4, Section 3: Word Focus: The derivative suffix +lI. Be sure to read all the Turkish examples ALOUD at least twice.
  1. Complete the first exercise in ET Unit 4, Section 3 (beginning, “Answer the questions below”).
  2. Perform the Substitution Drills and Class Activity: Guided dialogues in ET Unit 4, Section 3. Remember to perform all dialogues aloud.
  3. Read the Dialogue: Hangi şehirdensiniz ALOUD to yourself at least twice. Memorize any new vocabulary or structures. Complete the exercise that immediately follows the dialogue.

“Are these yours?”: Identifying Belongings

  1. Listen to the dialogue in ET Unit 4, Section 5: Conversation: Bu anahtarlar senin mi? Then read both the dialogue and the supplementary vocabulary ALOUD at least twice.
  2. Memorize any new words or structures from the dialogue and supplementary vocabulary.
  3. Work through the Substitution drills in Unit 4, Section 5. Remember to perform each one aloud.

Consonant Alternations

  1. Read through ET Unit 4, Section 6: Consonant Alternations: -p, -ç, -t, -k in final position. Be sure to read all the examples aloud, both before and after consonant alternation occurs (e.g., “kitap” and “kitabın”).
  2. Watch the Turkish Grammar Video:
  1. Commit the rules of consonant alternation to memory.

Yours, Ours, Theirs: The Genitive Case

  1. Read through ET Unit 4, Section 7: Grammar Point: The genitive case. Be sure to read each example ALOUD at least twice.
  2. Watch the Turkish Grammar Videos:
  1. Memorize the genitive case endings.
  1. Memorize the genitive case forms of the personal and demonstrative pronouns (e.g., “my,” “your,” “of these,” etc.).
  1. Complete Exercises A and B in Unit 4, Section 7.
  2. Read through the short dialogue Bu araba senin mi? at the end of Unit 4, Section 7. Be sure to perform it ALOUD at least twice.
  3. Memorize all new vocabulary and structures in the dialogue: Bu araba senin mi?. Can you recite it from memory now?

“Whose is this?”: Using the Interrogative Pronoun ‘kimin’

  1. Read through Unit 4, Section 8: Word Focus: The interrogative pronoun kimin, reading all Turkish examples ALOUD at least twice.
  2. Complete the Substitution Drill in Unit 4, Section 8.

Mastering Possessive Suffixes

  1. Work through Unit 4, Section 9 Grammar Point: Possessive suffixes, reading all examples ALOUD to yourself at least twice.
  2. Watch the Turkish Grammar Video:
  1. Memorize the possessive suffixes.
  1. Study the characteristics of possessive suffixes listed in Unit 4, Section 9. You needn’t memorize the list verbatim, but you will find it useful to familiarize yourself with each point.
  2. Complete the Exercise and Substitution Drills at the end of Unit 4, Section 9, reading your answers aloud.
  3. Read the short dialogue Bu senin kalemin mi? in Unit 4, Section 10.
  4. Complete Exercises A and B in Unit 4, Section 10, and perform the Substitution Drill.

Reading

  1. Read TK Workbook Unit 4B “EV ARKADAŞLARIM” thoroughly.
