Covid Safety Plan

This document dated 17 May 2021 reflects the latest government and British Canoeing guidance in respect of managing Covid19 risks within the context of organised paddle sport.

Government guidance on the route out of lockdown in England can be summarised as follows

The club has decided to modify our covid plan with effect from 17 May in 2 respects:

Car Sharing

Current guidance from BC is clear that car sharing can now happen, and the Club supports sharing/shuttles with appropriate measures in place; open windows, face masks and limiting occupants as best you can.

Participant Limitations

From 29 March there is no limit on the number of participants in an outdoor organised sporting event. And the covid plan will move away from the “one coach to five students” rule and will leave group size to the discretion of coach/Leader in accordance with BC Deployment Guidance.

If running a club session after 29th March coaches will still need to keep thinking about social distancing, and mitigation of risk.

Below is our co-vid policy/risk assessment/safety plan  effective from 29th March 2021 as agreed by the SCC committee.

CO-VID 19 GENERALLY

The priority is the health of members and helping to suppress the co-vid19 outbreak. Members should continue to follow public health guidelines.  Anyone symptomatic or testing positive or waiting for test results or under a duty to self-isolate or quarantine is not to borrow any club kit or to take part in any club trip or activity.

Co-vid 19 has not gone away and whatever precautions we take some risk will remain.   It is up to each club member to decide whether to take part in any particular club activity

CO-VID 19 RISK ASSESSMENT

Risk

Person at risk

Likelihood and severity of consequence

Control measure

Transmission of infection person to person

All

Low likelihood, high consequence

SIZE OF GROUPS

Size of Groups on trips/sessions to bein the discretion of the coach/Leader based on BC Deployment Guidance with a maximum of 30 across all groups on a trip/session

SOCIAL DISTANCING AT ALL TIMES.

2 metres where practicable, mitigation techniques where distance is less than 2metres. Less than 1 metre only when essential.

MITIGATION TECHNIQUES

Avoid face to face contact.

Masks in any close contact on dry land.

Rescues to be by “lowest possible co-vid-risk” techniques consistent with the safety of the rescuer/group/swimmer.

NO USE TO BE MADE OF CHANGING ROOMS AT FRANKWELL

NO MORE THAN 2 PEOPLE IN A CONTAINER AT ONCE AND MASKS TO BE WORN WHILST INSIDE

TRAVEL TO/FROM VENUES AND ON SHUTTLES

If members choose to offer or accept car shares beyond members of a single household or social bubble they should apply mitigation measures as follows:

SELF-ISOLATION IF SYMPTOMATIC OR TESTING POSITIVE OR AWAITING TEST RESULT

NO SHARING OF FOOD OR DRINK

REGULAR, FREQUENT HAND WASHING/SANITISATION

TRACK AND TRACE

Coach/leader o n any club trip or activity to make and keep for 21 days a record of those attending to assist with track and trace requests.

Transmission via door handles or padlocks on containers/ pavilion wc

Keyholder/wc users

Ditto

Wipe down with sanitizer before/after use. Gloves recommended

Transmission via kit

Borrowers

Ditto

Minimise handling of other people’s kit unless gloves/sanitisation measures are adopted.

Club kit/clothing/footwear to be washed in soapy water on return to containers.  Ideally kit will not be reused until dry but if wet kit is used it should be washed in  soapy water before as well as after use.

Ball games within groups of up to 30 members are now permitted with ball being washed after use.

Tandem craft can now be paddled by any pairing subject to washing down after use.

Transmission via money-handling

Payer/officer receiving cash

Ditto

Encourage all members to make payments via on line systems

Transmission in administration of first aid

Casualty, First Aider

Ditto

Facemasks for casualty and first aider unless inappropriate, gloves for first aider, Co-vid revised guidance for CPR recommended

Transmission during pool training sessions

Coach, students

Ditto

SERCO rules will control access/flow of traffic through building and minimise use of changing rooms with cleaning between each use.  Air recirculation/changing will comply with guidance.  Chlorine in the pool water will kill the virus so person to person contact is the remaining risk:

Coaches to enter/remain in the water only in emergency or whilst coaching rolling.

Coaches to minimise shouted communication to student.  Whistle to attract student’s attention and student then to come to side for instruction.

Coaches to practice social distancing wherever possible and to wear masks whilst on pool side unless communication is unduly impeded.

Rolling students to wear aquatic face masks.

A general clockwise flow of traffic to minimise face to face interaction between paddlers

coaches pre-booking attendance to avoid over attendance putting coaches at risk for no reward.
