Art Classes

Visual Art (Grades 9-12)

Course Description:

This course introduces the visual arts pertaining to drawing and design. The course emphasizes the elements of art and principles of design. Students will develop skills in procedures, techniques, vocabulary, and fundamentals of drawing and design. Students will have the opportunity to create works in various mediums such as pencil, paint, collage, ink, watercolor, oil pastel, and chalk pastel to enhance creative abilities.

Color and Design (Grades 9-12)

Course Description:

Color and Design is a yearlong course that explores basic concepts of visual communication and expression. The focus of the course is the relationship of color within the design, which is an image composed of various art elements working together in unity. Students will achieve an understanding of two-dimensional design through hands-on experiences in traditional and digital media.

Color theory will be introduced to create a foundational understanding of the attributes and relationships of colors. Students will explore how to create a color wheel to use as a future reference, how to mix and adjust colors, how color is used to refer to ideas outside of the picture plane, how color is used to create mood and express emotion, and how color is an integral part of any composition.

Color will be discussed as it relates to composition, which is the structure and organization of spaces within an artwork. Students will explore how to organize spaces and shapes within the picture plane, how to create different types of balance, how the elements of artwork within a composition, and how all parts of an image work together to create a unified design.

Painting A/B (Grades 10-12)

Course Description: 

This is a year-long course that introduces students to materials, procedures, techniques, and skills in painting. The visual arts principles of design will be emphasized and developed through various painting projects throughout the year.

Part A will emphasize the basic skills and techniques used in the following media: watercolor, acrylic, oil pastel, chalk pastel, and mixed media. Basic drawing techniques will also be incorporated as well as the vocabulary of visual arts.

Part B will introduce more complex painting projects and color theory. Students will enhance their ability to analyze the results of their work and that of others using vocabulary of visual arts.

Illustrative Life drawing (Grades 11-12)

Course Description: 

This course will stress techniques of illustration, life drawing, and portraiture using a variety of styles and media in the production of original artwork. Illustration will focus on the principles and elements of art in the rendering of subject matter. Students will explore the methods and styles of famous artists while understanding the historical contributions and cultural dimensions of their period. Life Drawing places emphasis on the study of anatomy and problem solving unique to rendering the human figure, still life, and much more. Lighting, costume, and advanced drawing techniques are practiced with the use of models. Students will learn to critique their own work and that of others and will prepare artwork for exhibit. Included is an exploration of art-related careers and employment opportunities
