7th Grade Brass/Percussion

Hello MMS Band families!

We’ve had a great first week of school and are excited to keep getting to know each other!

INSTRUMENTS/REQUIRED MATERIALS

Required Materials for each instrument are available HERE. A hard copy of this information was also handed out to students. We will be checking for required materials in class on Wednesday, August 27th to help students that still need to get materials. This will be for a grade.

You can set up a rental through Buddy Rogers HERE, or let us know if you have questions. Students will use a band book that will be individually checked out to them for the year, and have access to this material through their Smart Music subscription at home.

CONCERT DATES INFORMATION

Students will receive a green paper this week with all of their concert information for the year. Please be sure to look over these dates, particularly the concert dates on the list that are required part of the band class grade. There are also many optional events throughout the year that many of our band students choose to participate in as well. SCHOOL OWNED/RENTED INSTRUMENTS

School owned instruments are available for Double Reeds, Low Reeds, Horns, Euphoniums, and Tubas to rent through MMS (rather than a music store). There are several options for these students. CLICK HERE for more information.

SCHEDULE - Brass/Percussion Students

Seventh Grade Band Class is on a "Day 1/Day 2" schedule that alternates every day regardless of the weekend or any days off school. On Day 1 your student will have BAND, since your student is a Brass or Percussion student. On Day 2 your student will have PHYSICAL EDUCATION (GYM).

SMARTMUSIC

If you have received an email from SmartMusic about renewing your subscription you do NOT need to renew. Students will receive a new subscription through the school district that will be provided during the first few classes. Students will be utilizing the newest version of Smart Music that is compatible with Chromebooks and all web-based tablets/computers!

Percussion students will not be using Smartmusic this year. Instead, students will receive a pair of high-quality ear plugs.

PERCUSSION AFTER-SCHOOL SECTIONALS

After school sectionals for all 7th grade percussion students begin THIS week! Sectionals are immediately after school from 2:45-3:30p in the MMS Band Room on Tuesday and Wednesday. Students need only attend ONE day - it will be the same lesson both days. You can view the full list of dates HERE.

FALL MUM SALE

It’s time for our annual Fall Mum Sale!Fall Mums Sale

The order form is open now through August 31. This fundraiser benefits the entire Mason Bands program. Pickup will be the morning of Saturday, October 4 outside the Performing Arts entrance at the Mason Middle School.

8th Grade Trumpet Mouthpiece Update Time!

As our students enter 8th Grade it is time for a mouthpiece update! As indicated above in the Required Materials link, ALL 8th Grade Trumpets are required to update to a “Genuine” Bach 3C mouthpiece. Eighth Grade Band is every day so students will need to have their instrument every day. It is not on a Day 1/Day 2 rotation like Seventh Grade Band was last year. We will see you on Friday for our first day and then we will see you every day for class during the week of August 18th. Our Eighth grade students always love not having to keep track of Day 1/Day 2 anymore! Also, you might just see one MMS Band Director listed as your student’s teacher, but in 8th Grade Band students work closely with all three of the MMS Band Directors.

Specific additional information for Oboes, Bassoons, Bass Clarinet, Tenor/Baritone Saxophone, French Horns, Baritones and Tubas will be sent home during our first few days of class. JR. CINCINNATI YOUTH WIND ENSEMBLE

Auditions for Jr. CYWE will take place September 7–8. Information, audition excerpts, and audition sign-ups can be found at this link:

This ensemble is a year-round honor band that meets once a week on the University of Cincinnati campus. Please note there is a fee to participate each semester, but scholarships are available. Let the MMS Band Directors know if you have any questions!
