Despite scientific consensus about the climate and ecological crisis, our federal, state and local governments continue to operate like it’s business as usual. In response to their silence and inaction, XR Mass and our partners launched Emergency Watertown in September 2020, a campaign to compel our municipal leaders to tell the truth about what we are up against and do everything in their power to make Watertown sustainable and prepare this town and its citizens for what is coming.
Following declarations of climate emergencies by New York City, Boston, and even small Massachusetts municipalities such as Acton, the time is now for Watertown to act! Show your support the Resolution by signing our petition.
In January 2021, Emergency Watertown worked with Town Councilor Palomba to write a RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE DECLARATION OF A CLIMATE EMERGENCY. This resolution was included on the March 9, 2021 Town Council Meeting agenda. After a lengthy debate, the Council agreed to refer the resolution to the Committees on Public Works and Economic Development and Planning and Public Works for consideration (meeting minutes 3/9/21).
At the March 25th, 2021 meeting of the Committees on Public Works and Economic Development and Planning and Public Works, there was a heated discussion about weakening the language pertaining to “the goal of ending town-wide greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible and no later than 2035.” Despite strong objections from members of Emergency Watertown, Committee members agreed to alter language pertaining to 2035. It is expected that the modified resolution will appear on an upcoming Town Council meeting agenda.
