Brewing Terms

Barrel -

One specific size of a cask or a keg. In Britain, a barrel holds 36 imperial gallons (1 imperial gallon = 4.5 liters), or 1.63 hectoliters. In the United States, a barrel holds 31.5 US gallons (1 US gallon = 3.8 liters), or 1.17 hectoliters.

Cask -

A generic term for a closed, barrel-shaped container of traditional ale. They come in various sizes (9-gallon firkin is common) and are usually made of metal or plastic. The bung in a cask of "Real" beer or ale must allow the pressure to be relieved, as the fermentation of the beer--in the cask--continues.

Keg -

A generic term for a closed, barrel-shaped container of brewery-conditioned ale or lager. Like casks, they come in various sizes (15.5-gallon half-barrel is common) and are usually made of metal. A half keg or, 7.75 U. S. gallons, is referred to as a pony-keg.

Meeting Agenda

Help a Brewer Out: Bare Hands brewer Tommy was seriously injured in an accident, and Bare Hands is planning a benefit event (possibly March 22) to raise funds to help him. More details to come.

MEGA Barrel Project: We are in the early stages of planning another barrel project. Possibly a Belgian Quad in either a port or a bourbon barrel. We’ll need to gauge club interest and decide on recipes and barrel types.

MEGA Bulk-Grain Buy: We’re procuring the most recent price list and will make it available to MEGA members. Once it’s been posted to the website, we’ll announce a cutoff date and compile the orders.

MEGA T-Shirts: Chuck obtained a quote for having MEGA T-shirts printed. Basic 100% cotton shirt with two-color print (front side only) is $10.25 each for an order of 12 and $8.41 each for an order of 24. Two-color print (front and back) is $18.08 each for an order of 12 and $13.08 each for an order of 24. Add $1.50 per shirt for cotton blend. We’ll need to gauge club interest and decide what to order.

News: Other old business and new business.

Education Topic: How and why to brew a no-boil beer.
