KGNU’s FCC legal station ID is as follows. Please read this verbatim, as close to the top of the hour as feasible.
“KGNU-FM 88.5 Boulder, KGNU 1390 Denver”
To be read daily as close to 8:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 5:00 PM as feasible:
“KGNU-FM 88.5 Boulder, KGNU 1390 Denver with translators:
K229AC Nederland
K254CH Fort Collins,
and K256CT Denver, Colorado.”
Offered at the bottom of the hour, in addition to our mandatory legal station IDs, should read as follows:
“KGNU-FM 88.5 Boulder, KGNU 1390 AM Denver, 99.1 FM in Central Denver, 98.7 FM in Fort Collins, 93.7 FM in Nederland, online at KGNU.ORG, on mobile devices with the KGNU APP, and on Smart Speakers by saying “Play KGNU”.
Callers must give permission IN ADVANCE to be put live on the air or recorded for later broadcast. The FCC has been cracking down on this one. It is not enough to patch a call onto the air and say “KGNU. You’re live on the air”. That is too late—the call is already on the air and even if the person doesn’t say anything and just hangs up, it is a violation of FCC policy.
You must answer the phone off the air before putting the caller on the air. Ask “Do you want to be live on the air?” If the person says yes, you can put them on the air.
If you are recording an interview for a later broadcast, you must ask “May I record this interview for broadcast?” If the person says yes, you can record the interview and play it in full on the air or broadcast accurate excerpts from the interview.
Taking on-air calls (other than musician interviews) is discouraged during music programs. Any live caller puts the station at some level of risk for a possible language violation.
Callers do not have to be a KGNU member to win tickets given away on air.
Please do not say that KGNU membership is required when offering a ticket giveaway on-air.
Instead say “We ASK that you be a KGNU member. If you’re not a member, we invite you to become one now.” This language encourages—but does not require—anyone listening to become a member.
Please play any underwriting scheduled during your show as close as possible to the designated time. Play the pre-recorded underwriting announcement found in the “Underwriting” folder on wavecart.
If you can’t find the file, read the text of the underwriting announcement yourself.
Do not embellish the underwriting announcement in any way (see Noncommercial Policy).
