Assignments for Independent Study
The Definite Past Tense (“I went”, “You didn’t go”)
- Read the dialogue in ET Unit 12, Section 3: Conversation: Ayakkabını nereden aldın? and work through the substitution drills.
- Notice the verbs in italics? This is your first real glimpse of the definite past tense!
- Work through ET Unit 12, Section 4: Grammar Point: The definite past tense (affirmative and negative). Memorize the new suffixes and how they are used. (Don’t do the exercises quite yet.)
- Watch the Grammar Videos – Definite Past Tense with Turkish verbs:
- ‘How to say “I gave”’
- ‘How to say “I did not give”’
- Now complete the exercises in ET Unit 12, Section 4 to master the definite past tense.
- Read the paragraph in ET Unit 12, Section 5, and answer the reading comprehension questions verbally.
- FOR TUTORIAL: A Well-Earned Day Off: You often work really hard, but today you are finally taking some time to relax! Use the Present Progressive and the Past Definite to describe what you usually do that you are not doing today. (Ex.: I sometimes get up at 4:30, but today I did not get up at 4:30. Today I slept until 8.) Write at least 8 sentences.
- FOR TUTORIAL: What were the three most exciting things you did or saw last year? What were the three most boring things? Using your new vocabulary, write a paragraph (at least 8 sentences) using the Past Definite tense.
- FOR TUTORIAL: Complete the writing exercise in ET Unit 12, Section 6. Write a total of at least 10 sentences using the negative and affirmative of the definite past tense.
- FOR TUTORIAL: Rewrite the reading passage in the third person as directed in ET Unit 12, Section 8.
Ordinal Numbers
- Read the short dialogue Kaçıncı oldun? immediately preceding ET Unit 12, Section 9.
- Work through ET Unit 12, Section 9: Ordinal numbers, and learn how to use the suffix –IncI and the question word kaçıncı. As always, speak all Turkish examples aloud.
- Watch the Turkish Grammar Video:
- Read ET Unit 12, Section 10: Reading: Hande’nin doğum günü partisi aloud, and complete the subsequent exercises.
- FOR TUTORIAL: Write a paragraph (similar to the one in ET Unit 12, Section 10) describing a past birthday celebration, and how you want to celebrate your next birthday. Use ordinal numbers, the present progressive tense, the definite past tense, and your new vocabulary from this week. This paragraph should be 15 sentences long.

- Read the text “İlginç Festivaller” in TK Unit 5C (Kültürden Kültüre) thoroughly.
- FOR TUTORIAL: Write a paragraph (at least 15 sentences) answering the following questions, based on the reading text:
