Competition Instructions

Objective: Students will create a one page newsletter with article(s) detailing all the activities their chapter has completed for the chapter’s selected service project for the year.  

Learning Targets:

• Writing Clarity & Purpose
   I will produce clear, well-organized writing that fits the task, purpose, and audience.
• Writing Process
   I will strengthen my writing by planning, revising, editing, and trying new approaches as needed.
• Using Technology
   I will use digital tools to create, publish, and share my writing, and to collaborate with others.
• Writing Routine
   I will write regularly for both long projects (that involve research, reflection, and revision) and short pieces (completed in one or two days), addressing a variety of tasks and audiences.
• Integrating Media
   I will interpret and evaluate information presented in different formats—such as text, visuals, numbers, and multimedia—and use it effectively in my work.

Final Product Guidelines:

• Final product should be formatted as a digital newsletter.

• Article about the service project
• Pictures with captions
• Visually appealing graphical elements
• Headline

• One page total
• The article should adequately address the 5 W's (who, what, when, where and how) and be written in journalistic style (not narrative). Article text style would be suitable for a digital press release or email to newsletter subscribers.
• Include description of the event(s) the chapter sponsored throughout the year in support of the service organization.  
• State the total amount the Tome Chapter raised for the service organization during the current school year and/OR the total number of hours your Tome Chapter students contributed to the organization in active service hours.
• Include why the specific service organization was selected by the chapter and the relationship to Tome Society (explain one or more of the deciding factors below):

• how the goals of the service organization relate to your chapter
• how the service organization promotes literacy
• how the service organization supports one or more of the character goals of the Tome Society Book Award List

• “We believe teenagers should be encouraged ...to rise above discouraging situations and cycles of destructive behavior; to make a difference in the world around them; to look beyond themselves and reflect on how their personal decisions will impact present and future generations.”

Method of Submission:

Final product should be submitted as a one-page PDF file.

Scoring Rubric

Students should self-assess their work using the following scoring rubric before submission.

Failure to meet all rubric requirements will result in loss of points.

Please note: The point values listed in each category represent the maximum possible points that can be earned. However, fewer points may be awarded based on the quality or completeness of the work. Meeting the basic requirements of a criteria does not guarantee full points; higher scores are awarded for more fully addressing the criteria and demonstrating higher quality of work.
