Produce weight scanner research
Background
H-E-B prides itself on its sustainability efforts, but the store still use plastic bags to organize produce. Additionally, H-E-B customizes its stores to best suit their customers, thus we are improving the in-store experience to result in greater efficiency and ease-of-use.
Method
Two rounds of an unmoderated RITE study on usertesting.com with two different concepts in Figma prototypes.
Participants
- 6 participants (3 for concept A, 3 for concept B)
- HEB shoppers
- Mix of in-store only and in-store/digital customers
- Primary shoppers
- Efficient shoppers / often in a rush
- Average tech savvy
- Mix of age groups
- 100% iPhone users
Research questions
- Do customers prefer the “add to list” bottom sheet pattern over the toast/notification pattern?
- Do customers know how to find the produce scanning feature?
- Do customers know that the bottom sheet has different size views that you can switch between?
- On the medium-sized view of the bottom sheet, is adding produce weight distracting to customers?
- Do customers understand what the checkout barcode button does?
- Do customers find value in scanning produce weights?
- If customers don’t usually weight and label their produce, would this feature entice them to do so?
Script
For this scenario, imagine shopping at your H-E-B store.
On each screen, you’ll see a photograph of the store on the left, and a prototype on the right.
Note that because this design is a work-in-progress, not all buttons are fully functional.
Please think out loud as much as possible!
Test
Scenario: Scan produce weight
Imagine you’re shopping in the grocery store. You have bananas, tomatoes, and limes on your shopping list. You grab the bananas and weigh them on the scale. The scale produces a bar code that you can use to scan produce weights with the MyHEB app.
- In the MyHEB app, how would you scan the weight of the bananas on the scale?
- How would you verify that the bananas have been added to your list? Do you like how the list automatically expands to mid-size when items are added?
- Now, you want to scan the weight of the tomatoes. How would you do that?
- You want to scan the weight of the limes. How would you do that?
- How would you view all of the items that you’ve scanned? How would you expand the list? (Expanding list vs scrolling within mid-size)
- How would you delete the limes from the list?
- Without tapping, what do you think the Checkout Barcode button does?
- Click the Checkout Barcode button. Explain how you think you might use this at checkout.
- Do you think you would use a feature like this? Why or why not?
