Dear Directors,

Enclosed you will find the All-State Jazz Band audition materials that will be utilized for the 2023 All-District Jazz Ensemble. This is based on SET 4 that can be found on the MOAJE Website.

Audition Information

Regarding auditions, we will be having in-person auditions taking place at Festus High School on Tuesday, November 7th, beginning at 4:30 PM. The Audition Fee is $10 and directors must register all students ONLINE via the ECD7 All District Jazz Registration Form. Online Registration is currently open and will close on October 27th. Directors will be required to pay for all registered auditions. Check in will start at 3:30 on the day of auditions.

If a student auditions on more than one instrument, they must pay and register for each audition separately. The audition fee must be paid at the time of the auditions in the exact amount of your audition fees. ECD7 is NOT accepting cash this year. CHECKS NEED TO BE MADE OUT TO East Central Music Educators Association. Take the enclosed invoice to your accounting office and have them pay only the invoice amount. Please use the following address on the purchase order:

Lead Trumpet Auditions

As with last year, we will once again mirror the All State Jazz Ensemble Auditions in regards to the Lead Trumpet Specific Audition Etudes. Students will be asked during registration if they are planning on auditioning for lead trumpet during their audition. Students that denote this will play the required materials as well as the two lead trumpet etudes (in addition to the two section etudes) during their audition. Scores on the lead trumpet etudes will not detract nor add to the overall total, however, it will be used in determining a fit for a potential lead trumpet chair.

Clinicians

This year's clinician for Jazz I will be composer, arranger, jazz educator and active jazz performer Doug Beach! Doug Beach was the Director of Jazz studies at Elmhurst College, where he had taught since 1978, Under his direction, the jazz band has made over 30 European tours (twice at the invitation of the U.S. Department of State) and has performed in jazz festivals across the world. The band regularly appears with jazz greats such as Gary Smulyan, Dennis Mackrel, Nicholas Payton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti Austin, Lee Konitz, Jeff Hamilton and Bobby Shew. The band and its members are frequent award winners in DownBeat magazine's Student Music Awards, and in 2014, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band won the DownBeat large jazz ensemble category for undergraduate institutions.

Beach is equally well known for his work as a publisher and composer. His company, Doug Beach Music, is one of the world's leading publishers of educational jazz music. He has been the recipient of a Plus Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) nearly every year since 1995. In 1996, The Count Basie Orchestra and New York Voices recorded Beach's arrangement of "Cottontail" on a CD that went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. His other awards include a 2003 President's Award for Excellence in Teaching from Elmhurst College (the college's highest teaching award), the 2012 Elmhurst College Faculty Merit Award and a 2015 Jazz Education Achievement Award from DownBeat.

Beach is also a highly sought-after clinician and adjudicator. He has served as a conductor, guest artist and judge throughout the United States and in Canada, Australia and Europe. He has conducted numerous All-State jazz ensembles and twice has served as an artist-in-residence for the Illinois Arts Council.

A clinician for the All District Jazz II is yet to be officially confirmed and will be announced as soon as it has been confirmed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email.
