Parent and Family Engagement Policy

In support of strengthening student academic achievement, each school that receives Title I, Part A funds must develop jointly with, agree on with, and distribute to, parents of participating children a Parent and Family Engagement Policy that contains information required by section 1116 of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The policy establishes the school’s expectations for parent engagement and describes how the school will implement a number of specific parent engagement activities.

PART I.  GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

The School agrees to implement the following statutory requirements:

• The school will jointly develop with parents, distribute to parents of participating children, a Parent and Family Engagement Policy that the school and parents of participating children agree on.

• The school will notify parents about the Parent and Family Engagement Policy in an understandable and uniform format and, to the extent practicable, will distribute this policy to parents in a language the parents can understand.

• The school will periodically update the Parent and Family Engagement Policy to meet the changing needs of parents and the school.

• The school will adopt the school’s school-parent compact as a component of its Parent and Family Engagement Policy.

• The school agrees to be governed by the following statutory definition of parental engagement, and will carry out programs, activities and procedures in accordance with this definition:

Parental engagement means the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring—

(A)        parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning;

(B)        parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school;

(C)        that parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child;

  1. the carrying out of other activities, such as those described in section 1116 of the ESSA.

PART II.  DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE SCHOOL WILL IMPLEMENT REQUIRED SCHOOL PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT POLICY COMPONENTS

The school will involve parents in the joint development and joint agreement of its Parent and Family Engagement Policy and its school-wide plan, if applicable, in an organized, ongoing, and timely way under section 1114(b) of the ESSA.

Survey parents frequently for feedback at various times during the year. (Title 1 Survey, Feedback at Events, etc.)

PART III.  SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HIGH-STUDENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

The school will build the schools’ and parent’s capacity for strong parental involvement, in order to ensure effective involvement of parents and to support a partnership among the school involved, parents, and the community to improve student academic achievement.

Parents are invited to TEAMS gradebook account sign-up and training sessions.  Those who do not attend have information mailed home to them.

Gradebook parent account sign-up and training are offered at our open house parent event in the fall and as needed throughout the year.  Parents will be provided a click sheet with directions on how to access this. Parents would like parent education courses.

We will also help parents download the LISD web app by providing info at parent events and sending information home. This can be added to an information page on how to stay in contact with us.

We will continue our system of sending reminders about tutorials through email/text to parents.

Teacher training regarding effective communication with parents will occur in the fall with a follow-up/refresher in the spring.  

Fall and Spring

The school will, with the assistance of its district, provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their

children’s academic achievement, such as literacy training, and using technology, as appropriate, to foster parental involvement.

Parent Technology training offered via front office staff to introduce parents to the various forms of technology available to students and to give them an opportunity to access online tools to assist them and their students (Gradebook, Dojo, Google Classroom, etc.).

The school will, with the assistance of its district and parents, educate its teachers, pupil services personnel, principals and other staff, in how

to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners, in the value and utility of contributions of parents, and in how to

implement and coordinate parent programs and build ties between parents and schools.

Training for staff on communicating with parents will be held on a professional development day or during PLC.  This will include information on mass emailing progress reports in TEAMS and sending positive notes to parents through Review 360.

The School Parental Involvement Policy may include additional discretionary activities that the school, in consultation with its parents, chooses to undertake to build parents’ capacity for involvement in the school to support their children’s academic achievement.
