SMS Math and ELA Accelerated Course Placement

Sheridan Middle School offers several advanced placement courses for students in grades 6, 7, and 8. Our goal is to ensure that every student is placed in the most appropriate academic setting where they can be both challenged and supported. To achieve this, we use quantitative data including but not limited to Cogat, NWEA, and ILEARN. The following flowcharts are used to allow multiple access points for students to take accelerated courses at SMS.

If there is a concern about a student’s placement, students and/or parents may appeal the decision and request that the placement be reconsidered. The appeal committee will pull all data and gather teacher feedback and recommendations; then as a committee make the determination. The appeal committee will consist of school administrator(s), counselor(s), and teachers. Parents can file an appeal here.
