2. Aim of the subject

  • The aim of this subject is to help students develop their Linguistic Competence in English as a Foreign Language so they can sit a B2 certification exam successfully, which is a precondition to graduate from their college degree.
  • This course DOES NOT provide a certification in B2 or any of the other levels described in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

3. Essential requirements

  • It is advisable that students possess a consolidated B1 level as described in the CEFR. A placement test will be administered at the onset of the course.
  • Students must attend at least 80% of scheduled class hours.

5. Learning outcomes expected of a B2 Independent User

  1. Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.
  2. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  3. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

7. Teaching methods

  • Chiefly communicative approach aiming at a balanced development of all skills, i.e. linguistic, cross-curricular and general skills of the degree.
  • Students’ individual needs will be catered for so they can progress at their own pace.
  • Students will be requested to work collaboratively or individually to carry out scheduled tasks.
  • Oral tasks will be carried out in different grouping ways: pairs, small groups, whole group
  • Oral tests will be conducted in pairs.

Enough time to complete the tasks will be agreed upon with students.

7.2. Facilities and material required

  • The class is equipped with a computer connected to the Internet, a projector, an audio system and a blackboard.
  • Learning tasks and materials provided by the teacher through Google Classroom.
  • In order to carry out tasks and projects students need an electronic device with wifi access, such as a laptop or tablet.
  • For independent study, it is advisable that students work with their own materials (see section 8 below for suggestions).

Ancillary activities will be organised depending on academic needs and / or  the calendar of activities of public or private institutions if necessary.

9. Assessment

9.1. Assessment criteria

CA01 - Attends regularly all tuition activities, tutorship hours, seminars and any other scheduled activities.

9.2. Process and system of assessment and assessment criteria

  • In order to be graded by Itinerary A, students must carry out EVERY scheduled task according to the established guidelines and deadlines.
  • ATTENDANCE POLICY: In order to be graded by Itinerary A, all students must attend at least 80% of scheduled class hours.

ORDINARY EXAM (Convocatòria Ordinària)

Tests assess the degree of development of Communicative and Language Competence in English as a Foreign Language in the following SKILLS: Use of English (20%), Reading (20%), Listening (20%), Writing (20%) and Speaking (20%). Passing the exams is a requirement of the course. The passing mark of each of the skills  is 5.

Students who don't get a pass mark can resit the extraordinary exam

  Non attending students (Itinerary B)

  • Non attending students cannot be assessed by means of a continuous assessment procedure.
  • These students must take a final exam which will include all the contents seen through the school year. This exam will include all the parts of a B2 test: Use of English, Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. It will be worth 100% of the grade.

9.3 Academic integrity

  • Students are expected to act with honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility.as regards academic work.
  • Breaching academic integrity can entail obtaining a non-pass mark at the end of the academic period at the teacher’s discretion.
