4-H Photography

Information packet

This booklet is prepared to help the 4-H members and leaders become familiar with the 4-H Photography event.

Keep this page with your project material and refer to the guidelines when any questions arise concerning Photography for Home Arts.

TO PARTICIPATE:

  1. The participant must be enrolled in 4-H.
  2. All photographs entered must have been taken by the member in the current 4-H year (since the previous County Fair).
  3. All photographs shall be mounted on white or black foam board. Mounting must be in proportion to photograph(s).
  4. No exhibit shall exceed 16” x 20” outside dimensions of foam board.
  5. A picture hanger shall be securely attached to the back center of the foam board ½” from the top.
  6. Exhibitor’s name, age and project year should be on the back of the foam board in one of the bottom corners.
  7. Only five (5) entries are allowed per exhibitor.

Photography Class Definitions:

Up to five entries total for the event, in any combination of the Classes below, are allowed per exhibitor.  

Class 1: Black and White Group

Up to five black and white prints of film or digital origin, 5” x 7” or smaller, usually of a single theme, mounted on a single foam board. (Each of these groups will count as a single entry.)

Class 2: Color Group

Five color prints of film or digital origin, 5” x 7” or smaller, usually of a single theme, mounted on a single foam board. (Each of these groups will count as a single entry.)

Class 3: Pinhole Camera

A pinhole camera constructed by the exhibitor, accompanied by a mounted photograph taken with the pinhole camera. (Each pinhole camera with photo counts as a single entry.)

Class 4: Feature Photograph

A single photograph of film or digital origin, approximately 8” x 10” or larger, color or black and white. (Each Feature Photograph counts as a single entry.)

Class 5: Salon Exhibition Black and White Enlargement

A single black and white photograph shot with film. Exposure, development and printing by the exhibitor. (Each Salon Exhibition Black and White Enlargement counts as a single entry.)
