PROJECT SYNOPSIS: Sprint tells the coming-of-age story of Nana D., a queer black child of Ghanaian immigrants coming up in the U.S. in the 90’s and 2000’s. Based off an original screenplay and collection of written works by Nana Duffuor, Sprint explores themes of anti-blackness and self-denial, sexual violence and self-destruction, healing and resistance. The multidisciplinary stage performance blends film, theater, poetry, music, and dance. The show will run as part of the National Queer Arts Festival for its second year under the direction of Oakland-based performance artist, Dazie Grego-Sykes.
NANA Black female, 12-14. Our protagonist. Energetic, precocious, rebellious. Must
have some dancing ability.
MR. HAHN White male, 30’s-40’s. Nana’s high-minded junior high school Social Studies teacher
and arch nemesis.
CASSIE All ethnicities, 20’s-30’s. Nana’s mature and nurturing, queer, masculine-of-center
romantic partner. Must have some dancing ability.
SHARON White female, 30’s-40’s. Born and raised in North Carolina, Duke University’s feisty
sexual assault support counselor.
ILIANA All ethnicities, 20’s-30’s. An out and proud queer, femme non-profit professional who
introduces Nana to Oakland’s queer community.
JUDY Black female, 30’s-40’s. An outspoken leader in the recovery community with a big
smile and even bigger personality.
MIKE Black male, 20’s. Cocky, naive college student and proud member of the Duke Football
FEMALE VOCALIST To perform Miss Celie’s Blues
