Frequently Documented Accommodations in an

Individualized Education Plan, 504 Plan, or Individualized Learning Plan

The following list is not intended to be exclusive but suggestive so that parents and educators can make an informed decision as to whether online learning is appropriate for their child.

Documented accommodation or provision on student plan

How Wisconsin Virtual School can provide the accommodation

Assigned to co-taught class

Per local policy students may be able to leverage an online course with both a licensed instructor and special education instructor per local policy.

Preferential seating

Students learn in front of a computer and the family chooses the learning environment in alignment with

Additional breaks

Student's may work at their own pace and take breaks as needed.

Auditory support

Headsets can be utilized in conjunction with a talk-to-text feature. The technology is to be provided by the district or family.

Help with organization

Classes are inherently organized.  Students can follow a logical format.  Once assignments are completed they are directly submitted for grading to the instructor.  District coaches can also assist with organization.

Chunking of information into smaller segments

Online classes allow students to do small amounts of work at a time.  Students do need to be aware that this does not reduce the overall work, but it will allow a student to break up the work into small segments; this way several segments can be accomplished over a longer period of time, with breaks.

Paper format (standard or large version) for electronic items

Materials in most courses can be printed from the course page. This is the responsibility of the school district or student.

Modified texts or alternative books

Online programs do not have alternative books or modified text.  Many of the texts and material is embedded in the course with the exception of AP or computer programming courses which require additional resources outlined in the syllabus.  Courses do offer a variety of learning systems.  Some courses are more text oriented and others may be more audio-visual.  We recommend that the parent and students talk to the counselor or district coach before registering.

Use of assistive technology to magnify/enlarge

Computer font size can be increased to accommodate visual needs. Students may increase the size of the content on any screen by pressing the Ctrl and the + (plus) keys together.

Use of calculator

Students may use a personal calculator or access a virtual calculator.

Use of music while learning

Much of the course work is done outside of school and the use of music is allowed even without headphones.

Teacher/guided notes

Some courses have notes embedded within the course. In other cases WVS teachers will not provide guided notes. All content is available at all times and learners are able to access them at any point throughout the course.

Directions and content read aloud (text-to-speech)

Text-to-Speech, Speech Stream is available in most Wisconsin Virtual School courses Additional resources that may be helpful for having content read aloud include:

Advanced notice of large assignments and tests

Online courses expectations are transparent. All the course requirements and suggested due dates are given at the beginning of the course.

Extra/extended time on assignments

Extended time does not mean extended term. All courses have a set end date with suggested due dates for assignments and assessments. Students are not penalized for turning in work past the suggested due date in non-AP courses as long as it is within the course term timeframe. The only exception is for weekly PE exercise logs - a late submission of a PE exercise log will result in a deduction of points.

Extra/extended time on quizzes and tests

Most quizzes and tests are administered without a time limit, however, those with time limits can have time limits removed from assessments, as a request through the Special Populations process.

Extended term (one term class in two terms)

Courses can be extended into a full school year for a fee, through special request of the Special Populations Associate Director. It is recommended that this request is made at the beginning of the learners course, but can in most cases be accommodated for extenuating circumstances.

Frequent prompts and checks for understanding

Asynchronous online courses are primarily independent learning experiences. Many courses provide built-in checks for understanding or practice activities that are ungraded, and teachers are available to provide additional support as needed.

In WVS Plus courses (K-8), during live lessons teachers are able to give additional prompts and checks for understanding as a part of live instruction.

Multiple attempts on assignments and/or assessments

Many courses allow multiple attempts on course assignments and assessments. Additional attempts may be permitted on an individual basis through request of the accommodation/modification form completed by the district coach for the learner. If granted an additional opportunity, the student will redo/retake the entire assignment or assessment.

Some assessments may not be permitted to have additional retries as the answers are given when the learner completes the assessment and there are no additional test questions for a retry of the assessment.

Oral retakes on quizzes and tests

Arrangements can be made with the teacher to verbally assess a student.

Alternative setting for tests

Many tests are taken at the student’s discretion of time and place, if the student is within the district while taking assessments the alternative setting will be the responsibility of the district.

Notecard permitted on assessments

Notes are permitted on all assessments unless otherwise dictated by the WVS teacher.

Retake only on areas not mastered by student

Online courses cannot single out questions. If a student wishes to retake, they must retake the full assignment/quiz/test.

Repeated content

Once content has been viewed students will be able to return to it as often as needed for the remainder of the course. Any videos may be replayed multiple times allowing the student to take notes and work at his/her own pace. Students can also reach out to their teacher for additional resources for supporting gaps.

Reduced assignments or workload

Reduction in assignments will be determined on an individual basis based on IEP/504/ILP documentation. This request is done through the accommodation/modification form that is completed by the district coach.

Final grading (pass/fail vs. letter grading)

We will report points earned out of total points in the course. We do not provide a ‘final grade’ but rather a final score. The school can convert those points into their own grading scheme, eg. pass/fail if they so choose.
