Class Title and Description
Watercolor: Color Mixing Beyond R Y B
Expand your watercolor skills by exploring how to mix colors beyond the traditional red, yellow, and blue. In this hands-on class, you'll experiment with pigment combinations, learn techniques to create color harmony, and build your own unique palette. This class is designed for all levels—no prior experience required.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify and apply advanced color mixing techniques using primary and secondary pigments.
- Create cohesive color palettes for your watercolor compositions.
- Complete a series of watercolor studies that demonstrate your understanding of color relationships and mood.
Session-by-Session Outline
Total class time: 6 hours (4 sessions, 1.5 hours each)
Each session includes time for instruction, demonstration, individual work, and discussion/critique.
Session 1: Welcome, Housekeeping & Color Foundations
- 15 min – Introductions and Lifelong Learning Center housekeeping
- 15 min – Overview of course and supplies
- 30 min – Introduction to modern color theory and pigment types
- 30 min – Hands-on color wheel and mixing warm/cool primaries
Session 2: Pigment Properties & Harmonious Palettes
- 15 min – Review and discussion of Session 1 work
- 20 min – Demonstration of pigment characteristics (opacity, granulation, staining)
- 25 min – Practice exercises using labeled pigment charts
- 15 min – Overview of color relationships (analogous, complementary, split complements)
- 15 min – Guided palette creation using limited color sets
Session 3: Mixing Neutrals & Personal Color Study
- 10 min – Quick review and warm-up
- 20 min – Demonstration of mixing neutrals, muted tones, and shadows
- 30 min – Hands-on practice and labeled chart exercises
- 30 min – Personal color study planning and studio time
Session 4: Final Project & Group Critique
- 15 min – Review and project setup
- 45 min – Studio time for final project
- 20 min – Group critique and reflective discussion
- 10 min – Course wrap-up and evaluations

Student Supplies List
- Watercolor paints (at least 6 tubes or pans in cool/warm red, yellow, and blue)
- Watercolor paper pad (9"x12", 140 lb cold press)
- Round brushes (sizes 4, 6, and 10)
- Water container, mixing palette, and paper towels
- Masking tape and pencil
Classroom Equipment or Technology Needs
- Tables for individual work
- Sink access for brush and palette cleaning
- Projector (optional, for demonstrations and visual aids)
