Aligning the UAWD Bylaws with our Class Struggle Member Platform
This Bylaws amendment was passed at the October 2025 Annual Membership Meeting
via Zoom on October 26, 2025.
Whereas, the UAWD membership has arrived at a clear commitment to class struggle unionism after going through a lengthy formal process of political deliberation;
Whereas, at our June Membership Meeting, the UAWD membership overwhelmingly adopted a UAWD Member Platform that has a distinctly different political content of the Preamble and Article II of the UAWD Bylaws, which were drafted over five years ago;
Be it resolved, that the Preamble of the UAWD Bylaws be struck in its entirety and re-written in the following way, quoting from the introduction to our UAWD Member Platform:
Preamble
Unite All Workers for Democracy (UAWD) is a grassroots movement of rank-and-file UAW members, united in our vision of class struggle unionism and fighting to build a militant, democratic UAW that is run by the UAW membership.
What is class struggle? It is a struggle between two classes in society whose interests are diametrically opposed. Today the class struggle is between: 1) the wealthy minority owning class that controls the resources and facilities for making goods that make our economy run, i.e. the capitalist class or ruling class and 2) the vast majority of people who comprise the working class, whose labor produces all the wealth in society but who are not paid the full value of the wealth they produce. Why? Because the capitalist class keeps an enormous share of that wealth itself in the form of profit.
Every gain workers have made has been won through relentless class struggle.
We believe that class struggle is an ongoing effort we take collectively against the ruling class, through bottom-up organizing on the shop floor and in communities, to win the collective liberation of the working class around the world. Class struggle is rooted in vehemently opposing racism, xenophobia, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, nationalism, ableism and all types of divisions used to pit workers against one another. The ruling class maintains its power not only through economic control but by shaping societal norms, values, and beliefs through its institutions. We view class struggle not only as a contest over material resources but as an ideological contest about the long-term interests of the working class. That means having an orientation to the rank and file and the wider working class, rather than to the top labor officialdom or either of the two ruling parties, Republicans and Democrats, in the US.
Be it resolved, that Article II, “Object,” of the UAWD Bylaws be struck in its entirety and re-written in the following way:
UAWD’s purpose is to promote our vision of class struggle unionism. Our focus is on growing our rank-and-file movement in the UAW through organizing and political education on the shop floor in our workplaces. We aim to use our growing rank-and-file base within the UAW to organize in concert with class struggle movements in our communities, within other unions, across the labor movement, and throughout the entire global working class.
Be it resolved, the UAWD membership will further consider amendments to Article II in the coming year as we develop our core initiatives of establishing Local UAWD Chapters, developing and hosting educational and organizing trainings founded in our class struggle vision, and writing and distributing our publication, Daily Struggle.
